Tax Refund while abroad

    Hi guys,

I am currently abroad but I would like to claim my tax back from the 4+ years that I have worked in Ireland. Thing is that I am currently abroad and wont be back home any time soon as I seen on the revenue website that I need to submit a form and submit it locally.

I did consider hiring an accountant to sort it out for me but if possible, would rather do it myself. If sorting it out myself isnt possible, would anyone have any recommendations on who I could hire to do the job?

    Cheers guys.

Is it possible to claim back all that tax?

When I was emigrating, I could only claim back the tax I paid in that current year. I also did this in the couple of weeks before I left so I'm not of much use to you unfortunately.

You can't claim all your tax back from the last 4 years because you have left the country. What you and anyone else can do, is ask Revenue to review the last 4 years to see if you were taxed correctly.
Usually if you've been in the same job every year, then you were taxed correctly and no refund will be due. If you were job hopping and may have been emergency taxed then you might have been overtaxed. Refunds normally arise when people claim credits or reliefs that they might be entitled to such as tax relief for medical expenses.
Depending on what time of year you left the country you might be entitled to a proportionate refund of tax paid in that year based on your unused rate band and credits for that year only. Contact Revenue via the multiple contact channels available and advise of your present circumstances and request reviews as above.

Thought I'd bump this thread up, rather than starting a new one. I've been abroad since August 2015, and had worked full-time in that year until July. Only doing my claim for tax back for 2015 now. Have my P45 parts 2 and 3 ready and a P50 filled out. However, the P50 is for "unemployment" and technically I've been in full-time employment abroad since August 2015. Is this still the correct form to fill out?

P50 is no longer applicable for a year that has already ended.

You need to request a p21 balancing statement and obtain the relevant refund if applicable.

    Kind Regards
