So i handed in my 3 cards and was given a handicap of 20, so playing my first comp tommorrow, any advice? im more nervous of holding up the 2 lads im playing with, even though theyre off 20 aswell, but theyve more comp exp than me, are lads normally ok playing with a first timer? and were playing off the blue tees(!) which i havent played before, eek!

There is actaully nothing wrong with being honest about it.

When you meet the lads and do introductions, say - look lads this is my first competition and I am open to any advice or any tips along the way. Now there are stuff they can't tell you, but only a fool would go on about that with a first timer.

They are off 20 - so you will be in no way out of place. It will be fun

Golfers in the majority are sound.

    It will be grand.

Just try get bag right - placing bag on exit - not marking cards on green and just be thinking about your next shot as soon as you get to ball.
NO big deal - but have the stuff you need in your pocket - marker - glove - tee - spare ball on a hard hole. If you are taking another go -- say provisional and remember and call out the make and number of new ball.

You could watch a You Tube clip on yellow and red stakes and you would know more about them than 95% of golfers out there.

Make sure - you have a mark on your ball - and play your own ball at all times. Keep an eye on all balls - incredible how popular you become by just simply watching all balls and have a great mark for all balls played.

Try not to walk on a line on green. Some golfers are over precious about that sort of stuff.

On the tee box - watch were people stand and be well clear and don't move - back right for right handed player - back left.

    You'll be grand.

    Enjoy.

Just watch is the best way to learn.

By the way - grab a sand bag if courses have one for divots - way easier and faster.
    And of course Fixdepitchmark.

    Don't worry - few know them .

    Just ask.

Sure the pros ask how to for every single drop.

If its stableford and you are having a horror on a hole lift your ball once you can't get any points for that hole. Don't be holing out for a 8 or a 9.

On the first tee try and hit the ball as hard and as far as you possibly can.

haha thanks lads, well fortunately i did tee off before reading that and thank feck i actually hit a nice drive and found the fairway, ended up being a 2 ball with a nice young lad as the other lad didnt show up, shot a 115 off the competition tees which i hadnt played before and some of them added 60 yards, and turned the nice 140yrd par 3s into 199yrd little demons. and my best score so far on the white tees was 114, so im delireh!
