I initially read that as "happy Flanders day" which fits as well seeing as Flanders is one of the worlds most famous lefties.

I hate the word ciótóg, it comes from the Irish word for awkward. I am of an age where a very evil nun tied my left hand to the back of the desk and repeated slapped me across the face until I would pick up a pencil in my right hand. I was 3 and a half.

Happened to my father as well, but he is now ambidextrous because of that so I guess every cloud has a silver lining.

My mother was made to change as a child too. Even though she wrote with her right hand as a result, if she got flustered she changed to her left hand without realizing what she was doing.

When did getting beaten stop? I started school in the 70's but I was left alone and not corrected. My mother-in-law calls me an awkward looking hoor. :D

I was also in primary in the 70s. Nuns made their own rules until into the 80s.

Zurdos as we're know as in Spanish. I guess it means the same as in Irish but Zurdo is one of the very few words that begin with Z in the Spanish language, so yay for us!

Proud leftie here too. No problems using my left hand in primary school in the 80s. Nor did my dad either and that would have been the 40s/50s.

    The nuns were evil b*tches.

my missus could never understand why she was happier whenever i used my left hand!
She used to say "you're right handed!" I prefer to think that I am ambidextrous, but I really just like to use both hands! :D

The rest of us (normal people) should be allowed beat you up, or at least insult you weirdos, for being the abnormal bunch of goat-f*ckers that you are. Your deformity is nothing to celebrate.

^Jog on then normie, nobody wants your type round here.:p

Southpaw as well, never got any grief in school, started primary in the early 80's. My father and uncle got the crap beaten out of them by the 'christian' brothers for being lefties, by all accounts the brothers were absolute animals.
Thats why we were sent to non religous schools I suppose.

Studies find that left handed people tend to have IQ's than right handed people, though we tend to die younger... still who wants to be old and thick ;)

I too had my left hand tied back at school. I now write right-handed but use my left for most other things. Apart from writing, I favour my left but can use either hand when sawing, using a screwdriver, etc. When I played golf I used right handed clubs but a left handed putter. I used to change hands when playing tennis and it drove the other players mad.

    Not quite ambidextrous but close.

Duuuuhhh....us right-handers don't try to say we have a higher IQ than others and make ourselves look more stupid in the process.

Daughter was in school in the 70s, nun tried to make her write right handed. I went and had a word, or several. No more insistence on right handed writing.

In fairness, while the nuns taught them some fairly daft things, (Sister says there are devils under the ground, is that true?) on the whole we did not have any problems and the left/right handed thing was amicably resolved.

I wonder how many of ye have crossed laterality? Do you use your left hand and have a dominant right foot for example (pretend you are about to kick a ball) ?To see which eye is dominant , roll up paper, pretend it's a telescope and look through, which ever eye you automatically put the "telescope" is the dominant one. Likewise, pretend you are answering a phone, which ear do you put the phone to?

More left handed people tend to have dyslexia than right handed people. Crossed laterality is also very common in people with dyslexia.

I'm right handed/footed and very left eye dominant. Makes clay shooting hard as you are ment to shoot with both eyes open, but my left eye take over fully in my normal vision. So to look down over the barrel I have to close my left eye to aim properly with just my weak eye. If I shoot from my left shoulder the ejecting shells smack my face.

    Writing - left hand
    Kicking - right foot
    Phone- left ear
    Telescope - right eye
Hurling,cricket- left hand top and right handed style
    Throwing a ball- right hand
    Saw - left hand
    Fork - left
    Buttering knife - also left

    Interesting
I kick and write with my left,
    Right eye dominant
    Left ear dominant.
Mind you the MS hit my left leg hard so leaning a bit to the right now.

In football I favoured right for power and accuracy but could use left to pass and it drives me nuts to see one-footed players on £150k per week that can't "tap home" a cross and need to get on their favourite foot. I'm definitely left-eyed and left-eared, I could never answer a phone with my right hand/ear.

On a different forum (not Boards) some guy thought I was taking the pi55 when speaking of left-handed guitars, he thought you just change strings around. :) I also used to play drums left-handed.

schooled in late 60s and never made to change - probably due to the ma going down and giving the nuns a bit of advice about leaving my leftie sister alone or else :0 can write quite well with both hands - love to see the confusion on people's faces when in a meeting and change the pen between hands depending on how interesting the topic is. phone to right ear - so I can write with my left. mouse in right hand too - same reason.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 12,853 Mod ✭✭✭✭riffmongous

    Leftie here and proud!

I hated when we were made use fountain pens in school though and the page would get all smudged, only a leftie gets that :( Weirdly enough I can only use a scissors with my right hand though!

My grandmother is in her 90's and she was forced to use her right hand by the nuns as a child also. As a result her writing ended up terrible and it really knocked her confidence, to this day she hates writing cards or anything because she feels it's like a child's writing!

Yes, feels really weird using a mouse with the right hand, you strange right handed mouse holding folk!

Tin openers are biased against Lefties also.

All the time at home, have a few lefthanded razer death adder mice; also use a lot of different PC's at work so am used to switching between standard and reversed left and right buttons. I cannot use right hand for mousing at all.

Left hand dominant, left foot dominant, left eye dominant, but I hold a tennis racquet in my right hand and also a mouse in my right hand.

If, as the saying goes, most people sit at the right hand side of God where do lefties sit?

I'd be of the sound opinion we should go back to the days of the church and have lefthandedness beaten out of the yoof before it is too late and their writing is smudged forever.
