Will my visa debit card work in eurpoe - heading to italy in a few hrs and dunno if I need to take much cash with me!

mods - i know this aint the place but looking for a quick answer

I've always wanted a card where the credit side is functional, but not the debit.

They work differently out foreign don't they? It's the visa part out foreign, the debit part at home. Isn't it? I'm not that drunk am I?

Aye I don't think that's it either though is it? In dreary old Ireland u you pay Mr. Bank, in sunny clime you pay Mr. Visa, no credit given by either.

The alternative to debit is credit and no your debit card dosnt turn into a credit card when yer out foreign.

If it's bank of ireland they will probably suspend your account for going on holiday without telling them.

Na, it's not a credit card but you're paying the man that gives the credit. I think. Have I got this all wrong?

I've only ever had it happen with Credit Cards. But you should ring them and ask them to put a note on your card to say you'll be overseas for a while. You may also be able to do it online - I know I can with my AIB Credit Card.

In your online banking go into 'Services & Settings' > Manage my Cards. Select the card and choose 'Add Travel Note'.

Bastards never stopped my card when I bought a limo ride to a strip club for 15 yahoos from Blackfoot Idaho when I was full drunk one night though, never depend on a banker.

It should work fine. But ring your back to let them know where your travelling so they dont put a stop on your card.

They probably just checked historical transactions on your account and knew it was genuine :pac:

Husband decided to make a spontaneous gold purchase in Dubai at the end of last year. It exceeded his credit card limit so I had to withdraw the maximum balance from the ATM to lend him. AIB were all over it like sh!t and blocked my card straightaway. Banks don't seem to do spontaneity. Probably just as well.

Charge on every transaction? Have used my visa debit abroad numerous times and never once had a "charge" on any transaction over and above the actual cost of the transaction.

Only if it's a non-Euro transaction. Transactions in EUR currency will have same fees as back home

Most ATMs (at banks anyway) in Italy have no charges at all. I am not long back and used my bank card loads!

It's not going to work. Go to your nearest branch immediately and purchase 10 million lira and a book of travellers cheques. You should be grand for the next few years with that
