Car's first NCT due

    Car's first NCT due on Monday.

    Should I just take it in and let whatever fails fail or take it to the garage to at least get the tracking, alignment and lights done?

    my approach is to get it serviced if it's due and fix anything that will be a definite fail (which I'd be fixing anyway) but otherwise let the NCT produce a list of what needs doing
    Might be worth getting the headlamp alignment checked as that seems to be one of the most common failures - keep the paperwork from the garage, just in case NCT measurements indicate the headlamps are not aligned (happened to me once)
    Bring spare headlamp blubs and make sure the dips work just before it goes in for test - more than once I've had mine blow on the way to the test centre

    Wait until after the NCT to get any work done. You have to pay the NCT fee anyway so let them tell you first if there is anything that needs to be fixed. Just to get the tracking checked will cost you almost as much as the test itself. Check some obvious things like blown light bulbs, tyre pressures etc.

    If you are going to get it serviced it's best to wait until after the test so you only need to leave it with the mechanic once and get everything done together.

    Check all lights are working, seat belt receivers in the back haven't fallen behind Base of seat, hubcaps off & levels are correct. After that sent it in. All this 'pre-nct' stuff garages do are not worth the money on a relatively new car.

    Cheers... think I'll just pump the tyres, check the lights and seat belts.

    Pumped the tyres, filled the reservoir with water and made all the seatbelt bits visible

    The NCT is just a basic safety check. A proper service, not a €50 special, will turn up issues on a car that the NCT can miss.
