Lessons while licence is being renewed

My first learner's permit is due to expire and I was wondering if you can still get lessons while you're waiting for your new licence? The website says to keep the document/receipt as proof in case you're stopped by Gardai but I'm not sure if this applies to learner's permits and lessons. I'm not able to get in contact with my instructor at the minute but I want to try to plan when to renew it.
    Thanks for any help

I would have no problem in doing a lesson while the learner permit was away for renewal so long as it was still valid i.e. still in date. If it was actually out of date I wouldn't do the lesson. From an insurance perspective you nor your instructor would be covered.

I would think you don't have a valid learner permit at least until your application is processed and issued, at least. As above, a valid, in-date permit will be given back to you by the NDLS even if it's just a day before expiry. They will take permits away from applicants if they are expired.

For instance, you go to the NDLS office to renew and you accidentally bring an invalid document such as proof a new address. Let's say that was missed at the office but the discrepancy was picked up by the processing office- they must successfully contact you and ensure you submit the correct replacement. In the meantime, your permit expires. For arguments sake you send in a replacement document which is also invalid and the processing office reject your application (this actually happens all the time), you now you're taking lessons and you effectively have no business behind the wheel without a valid learner permit, IMO. The NDLS reject applications under these circumstances every day.

With the above in mind, I would be reluctant to take lessons without a valid, in-date permit, whether your instructor is willing to give them or not.

Thanks for your replies. I got my licence renewed, I didn't realise that they don't take it away if it's still in date so I should have done it sooner. I will probably just wait until my licence comes back to get any more lessons to be safe.
