    Hi all

Pretty sure head gasket on the disco is gone(oil in water expansion tank). That's bad news, equally bad is I'm parked at the top of a hill in West cork. I have vehicle recovery as part of my insurance but that will only take me somewhere local. Can anyone suggest a LR or Diesel specialist in West cork?

I'm not even sure I'm going to get it repaired so any one in West Cork want to buy an 02 disco with a blown head gasket at the top of a hill in West Cork? :)

To top it all off I live in Dublin and need to be back in Tuesday

    Thx

Pretty sure there's a mechanic who specialises in land rover on the ring of Kerry if that helps?

    Good luck with it.

Thanks for the suggestion, and I'll check it out, ideally something close to Skib is what I'm looking for

    I hope you got sorted.
    I'm considering buying a Disco 2 (yes I'm crazy....)
I'm trying to work out a maintenance budget, wondering if you could let me know if this is realistic????:
Purchase well kept disco in Uk, approx £7k sterling plus vrt
    1 x interim and 1 x full service annually, €600
€1500 put aside annually for major work that arises.
    Tyres, etc €600 per annum
Plus the 1080 road tax and diesel, I do 12k miles a year.

I want to go into this with my eyes open, I know this isn't a cheap vehicle to run and maintain, but this is about the max I'd be willing to spend...
Aim is to keep the vehicle 5 years +
Your help is appreciated as to whether this type of spend will keep me on the road. I use a good local mechanic who is very knowledgeable and reliable, would use independent LR specialist for particular jobs if required

Why not buy a Disco here in Ireland? For your budget you'd struggle not to find a decent Disco 3 imo.

Ive read some horror stories about disco 3s....they seem to be very unreliable.
D2s seem to be somewhat more fixable,
and I like the look of them also!

But I stand to be corrected about the Disco 3

I couldn't part with €10k to drive a slow, old Disco 2 regardless how reliable it might turn out to be. As they are more primitive there is no doubt less to go wrong than in a Disco 3.

UK examples are going to have endured 10+ years of road salting if they are urban examples, rust would be a worry.

Are you set on a Land Rover?

Rust is the deal breaker, I think I could deal with all the other problems but the idea of spending of re-chassis-ing due to frame rot.... doesn't bear thinking about
I've been priced out of a defender but TBH I've found them a very uncomfortable drive.

I've to tax a vehicle privatly so with high CO2 post 08 models, the tax becomes ludicrous.... 2K plus.

Very much like the land rover, but open to suggestions to similar

€10k or under would buy a fresh and decent Pajero or Grand Cherokee. I personally think Disco 3s & Landcruisers are overpriced. Particularly Landcruisers.

I'd think a £7k plus vrt Disco 2 is sheer lunacy.

If a Defender is an option presumably the likes of a Grand Vitara is ok sizewise? Or do you need credible off road ability? You'd get a 2007 Grand Vitara petrol for €3k that over 12k miles/annum would be more than fine in comparison to a Disco 2 from a fuel cost pov.

    Thanks for the advice
In fairness I was looking at the upper end of the market, one vehicle I looked at for 7k had a galvanised (replaced) chassis and a lot of maintenance work done.
Was hoping an up front spend like this might pay off in the long run

The Grand Cherokee has a Merc V6 engine, same as the E class etc and no fancy air suspension or anything like that.

The Pajero is similarly not complicated but doesn't have a Merc V6 in it, also the GC are all auto which I think is a big plus in a large, comfy vehicle. The 4WD system in the GC is allegedly well up there with LR, if not better. So too towing capacity. Tax is more than the Disco though as it's a 3.0 V6.

There's a gent in Ireland who rebuilds Discos onto galvanised pre-1980 chassis, vehicle can be classic taxed, (56), no NCT, can have classic insurance ( i got quoted 190 for 10k mile policy).
Anybody know anything about these vehicles?
