Raw Dog Food

I am thinking of putting my dog on Raw food but I am not sure what it is I get. All I do know is that it comes frozen. Is it just the likes of minced beef or pieces of raw chicken or duck and if so would buying minced beef from the butchers not be the same thing. Maybe someone who feeds their dog on Raw food could give me some idea. Thanks.

There are a tonne of threads on this subject here in the A&PI forum...

Do a search for 'raw food' or 'barf', which is Bones And Raw Food. Lots of great info on here.

Hi Op, try dogsfirst.ie for lots of advice and help. I recently changed our dogs to the BARF diet and they seem to be doing well. I buy the frozen meat mixes like you mentioned. They contain meat, bone, offal and veg. If you want to mix them yourself the website I mentioned details the ratio of each component that's required.

    Here's the mega thread : http://touch.boards.ie/thread/2056750085/1/#post80681796

I buy most of my meat from slaneypetfoods.ie they have a better variety than other suppliers.

Apologies for dragging up an old thread but i just want to know if anyone who feeds nutriment raw has found the meat to smell a lot more than usual as well as more bloody?

Some ‘flavours’ are definitely smellier and bloodier than others but i haven’t noticed much of a difference? Although I haven’t got it for a couple of months since we were trying something else. Have you contacted your supplier to see if anyone else has had issues?
I’m up with my boy (again) since 4:00am who’s having a mild pancreatitis flare up :( - I think from the other food so putting him back on the nutriment this week!

I switched my dog to raw in February. I started her in Nutriment which she wouldn’t touch so switched her to Paleo Ridge organic which she hoovers up!! I buy from Stephen who owns The Pet Parlour in Terenure so I would recommend having a look on his website. Dr Conor Brady is also a great nutrition source on raw feeding. He is also on Facebook as dogs first

In fairness he is the last person I would go to if looking for help with Raw Feeding. I often wondered about his qualifications as well as having a bad experience with him.

That’s a bit of a general statement! You need to quantify your post

Have our lad on Nutriment recommended by breeder and he has been on it since the start. he is now 7 months looks well and growing, no health issues TG. so have been trying the different types of Nutriment and slowly moving off the puppy version. he loves the beef and tripe and lamb and tripe or just the beef, wont touch the salmon or the chicken. cant say i noticed any smell or reason he does not like either chicken or salmon. The supplier i get my Nutriment here in Ireland has a new cheaper raw food called Just Nature, its a lot drier and not as moist as Nutriment. tried it and he eat the lot. but i think i will stick with the Nutriment.

Is anyone using the chubs for a small dog. I tried them as they were cheaper but jesus they are messy. Can anyone tll me how they are dealing with them?

I thought about dividing it up but I don't want to refreeze meat as it would take my dog 6 days to go through one of them

The nutriment ones? I have two of these that the Chubs fit in perfectly - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0000AN4CW/ref=pe_3187911_189395841_TE_dp_2

I wouldn’t keep them in the fridge 6 days though as i’d expect them to turn. Have you thought of trying smaller sizes? Dog food direct have MVM back in stock which are 1lb

Thanks, I'm okay for the storing, its more how you feed with them. I find them very messy. squeezing out the meat from it makes it hard to measure the amount I give and when I come back to it the next day the blood has leaked out and the chub is swimming in it.
I love the convienience of the trays, perhaps there's no solution for the chubs, just gotta squeeze it out and store the rest.

I usually leave it to defrost then slit down the middle and kind of drop it into the box (so remove the plastic) and then spoon out what I need each evening. I do up our lunch boxes in the evening lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 303 ✭✭misschoo

I stayed away from the chubs as I thought they’d be too messy. I use 1kg Paleo Ridge which comes in a carton type box. I get five days out of one box - my dog is small and I want her to lose a bit of weight. I semi defrost the meat, weigh it out into daily portions (one for morning and one for evening), bag them & then put it back into the freezer. Each morning I take out the portions for the next day and allow them to that in the fridge over the day. This has been working perfectly for me for the last 3 months since I changed her over to raw.

I just looked them up, Looks like it would work out a fair bit cheaper than Nutiment so I might give it a try.
How strong is the smell and how fast is delivery to Ireland

I buy it from Stephen in the Pet Parlour in Terenure. He can also ship it so would be cheaper than sending from the UK. I feed venison, duck and ox tripe mix and it doesn’t smell at all considering there’s tripe in it. I did get a box of partridge and some sort of tripe by mistake and I could smell it but he said it could have been the partridge too. He has a website that you can check out and he’s on Facebook too.

This is the one I give. It’s very easy to separate as well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,062 ✭✭✭✭tk123

Yeah I had that ox tripe and I was dreading opening it but it was fine. Raw 2 the bone on FB stock Bulmers minces - they come in 1lb but aren't sealed so if you don't want to deal with blood and guts avoid lol. The chunks are all separated though so handy to portion up.

Pet parlor in Terenure have a 2 for the price of 1on raw dog food for pre order and collection only. They stock paleo ridge as far as I know, just in case it's of use to anyone.

Can anyone suggest a reasonable raw product that has no bone content, that would be a complete meal for a large dog.

If it doesn’t have bone it can’t be complete

So is there nothing that could supplement a raw diet without bone

Is there a reason you don’t want to give bone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 344 ✭✭fennor72

Yes I tried a raw diet before on both my dog's. Unfortunately one of the dogs was not able to digest the bone fragments in the meat and I had to stop the diet. It's a pity because they loved it and I hate giving them nuts which I know is muck

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,062 ✭✭✭✭tk123

You can substitute with bonemeal I think but I’d worry i’d mess it up! Nutriment has very small pieces of bone compared to others.

What about a good wet food for them? Forthglade is my backup

Thanks I'll look up Forthglade because unfortunately it seems she cant even digest small fragments.

Bailey had a mild pancreatitis attack and was on it for about a week since we needed something gentle and he loved it! Pet Stop have it in single trays as well as boxes so you could get a few to try before stocking up on amazon/zooplus etc I actually have a box of it coming from Amazon in case he gets sick again - zooplus were out of stock.

Just a heads up if you're feeding PR - Timmy/Nutriment Ireland has started stocking it and it's cheaper than the Pet Parlour and free delivery over €40 so depending on which flavour you get you could make a saving! ;) I got some to try as Lucy seems to be going off the Nutriment and walking away from it! It tends to get sprayed by Bailey too so we'll see how the chunkier mince works out!

Wow thanks for that! That’s so much cheaper & the big box with 20 in it is better value and will last me 3 months!

Yep I noticed the price difference straight away and though of posters here! I hope he gets more flavours in - we're limited to lower fat mixes to be safe with Bailey so atm it's Tripe and Chick/Turkey. The smell of it lol >_< He has long boxes now that take 2 small poly boxes inside so if the dogs take to it ok I'll order a full (big) box next time and stock up. I've been buying smaller amounts from anyone who uses An Post after a mixup/delayed parcel where they delivered a smashed up box of rotten and leaking meat 4 days late(!) .. carefully wrapped in film and an An Post sack so my poor mum didn't realise what she was signing for until the guy was gone! Since then I've been getting it sent to work since so have been sticking to just the one box for convenience!

Oh and Fetch's bagged chicken necks/carcass are cheaper than the rest too as they give a discount when you buy 10 bags ;)

You seem to know a lot about raw pricing so would appreciate some input. I feed my three Labs Skinners and then supplement it with meat I get from my butcher - cows hearts, sheep heart, liver, chicken carcasses etc.

However I’d like to get more online and I have an old chest freezer that I exclusively use for freezing my dog food.

What’s the best value place for me to get some raw online? I think I’d spend about €100 a month but want to get as much bang for my buck as I can.

Slaney, dogfooddirect and raw 2 the bone (they’re only on FB and won’t send by courier but might have a drop off spot near you) will give you a bulk discount if you ask them. Mick will give a discount if you go to the DFD depot too so if you were going to be up in Dublin it might be an option.

I see Fetchs do the Nutriment starter pack and give good discount on chicken necks and carcasses. Is the Nutriment good?

Yeah it’s good but it’s a bit fine and one of mine has gone off it. Also it has veg which you may/may not want to feed. I’ve switched to paleo ridge and she loves it and not as messy since it’s chunky. I usually get the nutriment carcass and necks too but i’m going to try the DFD necks because the nutriment ones can go off quickly.

I FEED MY DOG RAW MEAT ALL KINDS, AND SOME VEGGIES ITS THE BEST FOR THEM.

This seems like a good deal so think I’ll go for it...

    https://www.nutrimentireland.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=136&product_id=379

And then get some duck carcasses and necks from Dogfooddirect. I see the chicken is more expensive and not sure my lads will notice they’ll have it gone that quickly!
