Many on here doing it this year?

Just looked at the new routes.

Cycle is pretty much the same as last year with a few extra switch backs so only 4 laps instead of 5 going up the khyber pass on each lap.

Run route is completely changed. Start and finish at the boathouse with no cross country so potentially faster but you go down the Khyber pass on each lap. Have they done this is in previous years? Could be a potential bottleneck...

Bikes and runners on the Khyber at the same time? Don't like the sound of that.

I'm doing the Olympic. Did the super sprint last year. Happy with the change of course as didn't enjoy the cross country run last year given the torrential rain.

Its a good race, very well organised on the day, and a great buzz in the Park- but after getting Liffey sick last year (along with so many others) I'll leave it till the last minute to enter, rainfall dependant.

If they had released the results of their "sickness" survey from last year, I'd have entered already, just to support it. But as things stand I don't fancy that level of sickness again, if there's a similar run-off from upriver sewers, and am willing to risk missing if it sells out.

I really liked this last year and was a disaster race for me, had no sleep the night before and the weather just made it miserable and cold, but as I said enjoyed it,

Well organised and nice people organising it.

Plus sure the goodie bag is renowned now for being worth the entry fee

I'm doing this for the first time this year heard of a few people getting sick alright is this something to worry about?

I raced it two or three times previous and had no issues. Last year there was a lot of rainfall prior to the race, which leads to excess run-off, and seemed to cause illness for an increased amount of swimmers.

Its a risk you take swimming in many Irish rivers, chances are you'll be fine if rainfall levels are normal.

I got badly sick last , swore I wouldn't do it again.

But back I go in search of easy national series points :/

Question for anyone who has raced this before as well. Used my P3 last year and probably had my worst bike of the season. Would I be better off using my S5 road bike this year with all the turns on the course?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,435 ✭✭✭joey100

Nah I don't think so, course last year was very wet and slippy, especially if you got out of the water quickly and in one of the earlier waves. Towards the end it was drying a little and the grip improved. Course has changed this year but I def think it's a TT bike course.

Sickness from the Liffey seems to be the luck of the draw
I was fine after last year's swim despite the heavy rain but was incredibly sick the year before

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 143 ✭✭Fiftyplus

I was another to get sick last year which meant I missed Lost Sheep. Ok other years so presume the heavy rainfall was the cause of it. Nice to hear the run has come off the cross-country route - a bugger on the legs afterwards. Well run event and may do it again but waiting until late, if I miss it then so be it.

Anyone know what time the first wave usually goes off at?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,062 ✭✭✭cjt156

First wave usually away at 9:00 if I remember correctly - although the count-down clock on the website says 10:00 start this year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,373 ✭✭✭iwillhtfu

Just saw a post pop up on twitter it looks as though those of us putting it off till the last minute missed out. Sold out now.

I really hope it's a 10 start, was a nightmare last year, felt like it was a very early start and noticed a big difference with Carlow with the later start

I picked it up the evening before last year at the Garda boat club.

    Cool thanks.

Always like to have it the night before. Is a bit more relaxing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,373 ✭✭✭iwillhtfu

I picked it up on the morning last year. No hassle or queues. Transition is right beside collection point.

Well it turns out that was a blessing in disguise after all.

Crashed on the bike last night up ended over the bars and dislocated shoulder :(

Game over for this year. Turbo time arrives earlier than planned.

Sorry to hear that, but at least its the right end of the season for it to happen

Bit of a pity party yesterday but sure it'll be grand I wasn't chasing podiums either way :D

Slightly concerned as to how much more damage I've done 4th dislocation and 2nd complete dislocation but I guess I'll find out during the week. :(

I'm annoyed mostly about the swimming as it was finally starting to come good.

Back to the bands and stability exercises (which btw feel like you're doing nothing with such small movements.)

Two hours between transition closing and my wave; wouldn't make more sense to send the Spint waves off last?!
Gonna be very lonely finishing when everyone else is long gone...

I'm in the last wave... think upon it as incentive to finish faster (before they run out of icecream!)

Yep, my wave is off at 10:00; prize-giving at 12:00...it'll be tight!

    ...no...no, it won't...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44 Cb12345

Everyone else long gone, I doubt it........ I'm off at 10.00 too and finished in 3 hours 30 last year. Hoping to be a bit better this year and by a bit I mean 5-10 mins faster.

Folks I'm looking for a place for Sunday. The race had sold out before I I had the chance to enter. If anyone can help me I'd really appreciate it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18 pmeehan

Does anyone know if there are shower facilities available after you cross the finish line? Am heading to Croker afterwards and it's going to be pretty tight with the transition only re-opening at 1.30!

There is mention of showers available in the GAA club next door but I've never seen any evidence of them being used in previous years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,462 ✭✭✭TheBazman

There are showers in the gaa club where most will be parking. Very basic but should do the job if still there.

Great race, organisation, weather, course, and turnout!

I had a decent swim, good bike, ok run. Happy at the end... but a lad came up at the finish asking if I was a good swimmer... eh I'm not too bad, why? He told me I had the fastest swim of the day. I thought he meant in my AG until now... down as a 16:07 swim! Don't know why, I started in the correct wave and turned at the correct bouys. I'm listed as a DQ in the results though! All that effort for nothing! :P

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,157 ✭✭✭Kurt_Godel

    Just for my own sanity...

We swam downstream to the first white Vodafone bouy, turned and swam upstream along the orange divider, there was a gap period with no divider, then along another orange divider, round the second white Vodafone bouy, turn and back downstream to the exit. Have I got that right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 153 ✭✭Doeshedare

There were 3 white Vodafone buoys, one downstream, one a bit upstream from the entry/exit and one much further upstream which was the final turn for home.

I got stuck in the weeds at the beginning, struggled to get out, breathing a mess and only settled down for once we hit buoy 1. Poor swim, great bike and good run.

Run was 500m too long but was the bike a little short?

Great event though and nice to finish where we started

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,157 ✭✭✭Kurt_Godel

Ah fair cop so, I turned around the second bouy. Thanks for clarifying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,462 ✭✭✭TheBazman

Yeah there were 3 white buoys in total, 2 in the upstream leg. I thought the swim was long, measured at 1770 metres. No biggy. It's a tough cycle course imo with the Khyber x4. Organisation was too notch and the weather was great.

Briefing kept mentioning turning at the second white bouy (meaning second on the upstream leg) so your confusion was understandable. Hard luck. Youd had a good race otherwise.

I measured 1650, another girl got 1700. River marshal said it would be 'a bit' long.

Pity they didn't have a map of the swim course with bouys in their briefing... but I'm clutching at straws here! At my age confusion is understandable and expected. Good to see you out there (and on here!), you had a solid race yourself, with a great bike in particular. You just need to sweat a bit more for the run ;)

Great event all round, always love this race.
