Can anyone recommend a protein powder for a beginner, not whey based!

I'm hoping to try a smaller size powder and something plain enough e.g. vanilla flavour!

    Thanks!

Any of myprotein/bulkpowders/theproteinworks/go nutrition do bags of 250g or even single serve samples, so you could try a few to find a suitable flavour, but I generally find strawberry or chocolate taste the best. I've actually never tried a vanilla one I've liked.

Any reason for not being whey based?

They don't do less than 1kg bags (well, MP or BP anyway) and I didn't find any samples in non-whey protein.

just looking there now, you're right, didn't realise how hard it is to get non-whey under 1kg.

I had thought they did too. Well even 500g.

Is there anything specific to look out for as a beginner? Is there a big diffrence in pea Vs Hemp Vs Soy protein etc?
The health stores do smaller packs which might be a better option for me to try out (I know online is cheaper buying in bulk), but I'm not sure what I should be looking for on the label.

Holland and barrett have a good range but it's a good bit pricier than myprotein/bulk powders

    Protein content per 100g.

From what I know of those choices, the one that doesn't make you gag would be the best option.

    Are you vegan?
I've a vegan friend who uses Pea I think.
Soy is for wimmins, so you might be ok there too ;)

I actually only need to avoid whey protein as I have a problem with dairy.

Is there oestrogen in soy based protein powder? I don't drink soy milk because of the hormones associated with soy (family history of heart problems), it would explain why the soy protein powder was so cheap in the health store.

Is it lactose intolerance? If so you might get away with a whey isolate - I know some people do, but I am sure it depends on the severity of your intolerance.

It is, I know in theory I should be okay with just whey but I don't want to start off using whey, I would prefer something I know I won't have problems digesting.

Soy protein does contains phytoestrogens which can result in increased level of oestrogen.

You have to be consuming massive amounts of soy for it to have anything resembling a hormonal effect. I imagine it is cheap because soy is easy to grow and the protein powder is beyond revolting and no one should ever consume it.

I tried it once and never again. It doesn't even really dissolve - it's kind of a suspension and if you don't drink it within seconds of shaking it up it starts to separate straight away. Blegh.

I would try whey/isolate and see if it has an effect on you. Whey really is awesome. It dissolves quickly and easily, it's amazing quality protein, it's smooth and mixes well with flavouring, it's pretty cheap.

I use rice protein. I couldn't tolerate the taste of pea. Hemp is ok, but not as much protein. The sunwarrior range is tasty, if expensive, and some find it a bit too sweet. I just get plain rice protein from myprotein or bulkpowders & add my own flavourings (cocoa powder & stevia, usually).

Whey is a complete protein - as are most animal based proteins (ie they contain all the essential amino acids your body needs)

Rice protein alone will not give you all the essential amino acids you need, you'll need to complident that with diet or use in equal parts with pea protein. Ie rice and pea protein together contain all the essential amino acids and is probably the best option for you nutritionally if you want to avoid whey/casein/egg based proteins and don't want to improve your general diet as an alternative.

That being said, do try pea protein before buying I bulk. It tastes "earthy" and some people don't like it.

The whole "complete protein" thing is largely redundant as it should should really bit a fraction of your total intake.

But what happens if me and my protein shipment get washed up on a tiny island and it's my only protein source? You'll look pretty silly then.

You'll draw a face on the tub and talk to it, probably.

Extending that logic - the whole taking protein supplement at all is redundant. (Which I agree with to a certain extent "proper food"is going to be better).

But I don't know what this posters diet is and advising to take two complimentary proteins powders makes sense to me. Certainly it would be remiss not to give the information. There is no wrong answer here. Only advise based on opinion and experience.

Well the whole protein supplement thing is redundant really. It's just food.
It's usefull to make up a short fall. But other than that offers no benefit.

Two complimentary proteins might appear to offer a more balanced amino profile. But that's only useful if the overall intake is balanced. It probably isn't. what if the rest of the diet bias some aminos more than others, if that case maybe pea only compliments it better than pea/rice mix?

The above also assume that our requirements for all the EAA's are equal. Probably not the case either, maybe we need more of the stuff found only in one or the other.
