Germany stops ISPs dictating the use of their routers only

Since 1st August, ISPs in Germany cannot prevent their customers using their own equipment and need to provide the relevant information.

    More Info (in German)

Sigh. Wont happen here, that would require knowledgeable legislators :P. Naturally, the ISPs were dead-set against it while the router manufacturer's pressed for the change in the law.

    Fantastic :).

Would love to see that here, but won't hold my breath. In fairness, some ISPs are fine with it.

Why not sent a request to ComReg. You never know they might think its a good idea and implement it:

Would be interested to know if this extends to OTT services. Maybe murph can chime in on that one.

If you to be allowed to dial your own IPoE/PPPoE/Ethernet connection but lost access to SIP/IPTV VLANS then it'd really only be a half open system.

A Google translate of the included link seems to imply all associated services are included:

"Henceforth Internet provider must support at its terminals and for all about provided services such as VoIP, the free choice of compatible terminals by the subscriber."

I'm sure a German speaking human can provide us with a better translation.

Im in Germany and use my own router on Vodafone's (Telekom's) VDSL network. Vodafone gave me the SIP username and password no problem and my VOIP works very well (router has a built in DECT base station, TP-Link VR900v)

Was just about to do that, lol:

"Henceforth, ISPs must support the customer's free choice of equipment for their connection including (equipment/access) to all other services provided through that connection such as VOIP."

Also applies to cable networks; AVM have released their DOCSIS FRITZ!Box units to the general public in Germany now. Whereas previously they were only available through cable providers.
