Agent brought me cattle earlier this year. They came from West Clare and they have turned inside out since they came here. Delighted with them.
Was thinking of trying to contact him over the winter to ask would he have more of the same type next spring.
Is it a reasonable thing to do or would it be a no no

Definitely ask away. That's how I sold a lock of weanlings in the shed last year ;) Plus a lot of smaller farmers (especially the older ones) are delighted to hear how their cattle got on.

OP, what part of west Clare was it? North west, I bet. Hard to beat the Burren area for store cattle. We bought a good few from there over the years. They'd put on 350Kgs over the year, and thats with no meal fed.

Were bought in Kilrush mart must look at the cards again nearly sure owner was Kilrush as well.
They are HeX and while I can't be sure I reckon they aren't far off gaining kg/day

Would you not bypass the Agent & go to the Breeder?

Oh! I;d assumed that that's what CHOPS01 was saying he'd do. Definitely do that, look at the cards and perhaps phone the mart to see if they have a contact number for him. Dealers/agents are all well and good but it;s easy to cut out the middleman unless you're far from Clare.

Were the tags all the same prefix? You might get somewhere with that? A lot of lads don't have a landline anymore.

Sorry think i took that up wrong there , assumed he was going contacting the agent to see if he would be buying similar next spring, of course the original owner would be ideal if they all came from one herd

That's exactly it. Have name on the cards should be easy enough track him down. Thing is would I be playing into his hands. Alternatively could ask him when he is going to mart again.

Not at all. If you don't try you can't lose! I've seen people bring them to the mart, not sell & offer the private seller the last bid price. Kinda defeats the purpose of private selling avoiding hardship!

Not that familiar with the blue cards but is his address on them? Write a letter with your contact details and say that you would be interested when he has cattle to sell again

Posties are very good at finding the right ppl

If you can get a number for him try. I buy cattle from the one man every year. I bought his cattle in a sale and liked them.

I tracked him by the card as you are looking to do. He knows exactly what I'm after and I know the price every year even if the beef price is €6.00 kg or €1.00 kg we have the same deal every year. We are both happy with the deal.

It's gone to the stage I needn't go to him, I could do a bank transfer and tell him to send them up to me. He trusts me and I trust him. I go for the chat and cup of tea at this stage.

Op, I'm not too far from Kilrush, if you want to pm me his name and address, u could ask one of the lads who contracts a bit. Did you try his no in the phone book?

Either that or send a reistered letter with your number on it. You'll know it was delivered and if he's interested he will contact you. Know a dealer around here that does just that
