Audio tracks for video

    I recently purchased a digital audio recorder and intend using it to record continuous audio to add to my videos. I was out today 'covering' a story on roadworks that will be starting nearby and continue for the next two weeks. I shot the video clip and recorded 2 minutes of wild track. Should I use this set up or just use the camera to record the wildtrack instead? External microphone or just use the onboard one? And by how much should I drop the audio track by, so I can do a voice over in certain parts? Is there a 'level' that the professionals use? Thanks in advance for any help you guys have.

    i'm not quite sure if i understand the question but, until today, i've been using my old D3100 DSLR to record the videos; with a bad built-in microphone and no audio-input, i ended up recording the audio separately then sync it later when editing;

    i start recording on devices, clap loudly 3-4 times to help the sync ( and when i'm changing subject to make it easier to separate large clips ) then on post-production i select which audio sounds better to me then use that one; for voice-over, i drop the sound to what i consider a comfortable level ( debatable, of course. )
