Belclare vs. Charollais

Currently have a belclare ram but the lambs are not growing/very hard to finish so am considering replacing him next year with a charollais ram. Only have 30 ewes so 2 rams would not be necessary. Only thing about the belclare is that he produces lovely ewe lambs! Any ideas/recommendations?

If it was me I wouldn't be keeping any ewes lambs from a charlaois. For a duel purpose sheep I would probably go with a texel

Why would you not keep charollais ewe lambs?

    No milk

    No milk

Their excellently designed for the butchers block so don't try and make them something their not. You can add flighty and poor mothering ability as well.

As said no milk and clueless to know what to do with a lamb when it's born

    I'm sure there's exceptions though

Few and far between, Charollais are not a maternal breed. If I had 30 ewes wouldn't bother breeding replacements, use Charollais cross them all and buy in replacements

Lleyn are a maternal breed like belclare and if we didn't castrate the lleyn ram lambs at birth, we would find them very hard finished, As it is they take 2 -4 weeks longer than the vendeens and all grade R3s

I find the same with the Lleyn ram lambs also. I think it's because they start chasing earlier. Never seen any other lambs as bad as the Lleyn
