Am not on Virgin and can access proxybay.tv and tpb

The FBI took KAT off line the other week.

Yeah but it came back straight away, Im genuinely baffled here, Ive always been able to find a working proxy and places like https://unblocked.cat/ always list the currently working ones.

That's just google telling you that website's SSL cert is bad. Not a block by anyone.

I think virgin and eir block tpb but they block domain names, so what people do is create thousands of alternative domain names that go to the same place, you'd just have to find one of those.

TPB is bad though(and kat). Breeding grounds for FBI and MPAA people to send you letters and fines.

How do I get rid of it though? It wont let me progress...

Id be more worried about being struck by lightning or attacked by a great white shark tbh.

This happens in all my browsers, the only browser that gives me an option to proceed is Opera and when I tell it to load the page anyway I get redirected to https://www.virginmedia.ie, does anyone have any clue what is going on here?

Okay I just disconnected the Ethernet cable from the router to my pc and connected to the router over wi-fi instead, fixed the issue straight away, leaving wi-fi swiched on when I go back on the ethernet cable also fixes it, turning off wi-fi restores the problem instantly, router restart made no difference, at least I can get access to them now though...

I doubt these American agencies are going to bother sending any letters or fines to Irish visitors.

Its virgin blocking it. I get the same when connected to my router, once I connect to mobile data on my phone it loads without issue.

    The "Uses HSTS" is important.

If you connect to KAT/TBP with a different connection(or VPN etc) then connect with a regular Virgin connection you should get a Virgin webpage but as theyve started using HSTS this change means your browser thinks somebody is pretending to be the site and refuses to go anywhere. Its the same protection that would stop a cafe wifi putting up a fake facebook at facebook.com and stealing everyones logins.

Anything I can do about it? The ethernet cable is 3X the speed of the wifi in this house.

    Same issue here.
All PB proxies that I used to use(for legitimate purposes) now give a certificate error and then redirect to Virginmedia.ie.

I wonder what else UPC have decided to block and/or are watching what their customers are up to??

I wonder is it to do with this?

That doesnt explain why it works over wi-fi but not ethernet though, its the same router Im connected to...

DNS is per interface, you fixed it on one interface at some point in the past but not the other.

put in 8.8.8.8 as your prefered DNS

    then it will work.

It's blocked by a court order. Which virgin actually fought to not have to block.

    Unlike eir who bent over

TOR browser still works for Virgin users, once you get through the very annoying reCaptchas

Blocking IP addresses is one thing, but putting up fake SSL certificates pretending to be the site you want to connect to is a different story altogether. Though if opera is allowing you to ignore the fake cert warning and the HSTS warning, and you still get redirected to virginmedia.ie then that means they aren't doing anything more sinister. But, in theory it could mean a strategy of allowing people to access the site, through their(or somebody's) man in the middle, and where they get to see exactly what content you are downloading.

They arent spoofing the sites cert, your browser is just getting a page from the wrong domain (virgins warning page). They naturally provide the valid virgin cert for their own site and this triggers a HSTS warning.

Still not working for me, I have the compal bridged, and my c7 has to use dynamic IP. Do I have change the DNS on the compal?

    Thanks.

You'd have to see the cert that is returned to be sure, but from looking at the OP's error, it suggests the cert that was returned was self-signed or has some other certificate authority problem, rather than just being a valid (if unexpected) virginmedia cert. afaik there is a different error for that situation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 426 ✭✭Dubwat

If you click the 'advanced' button on the warning page, you get:

proxybay.tv uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate is not trusted because it is self-signed.
The certificate is only valid for advice.upc.biz
    Error code: SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER

Use WiFi to get onto the proxy and download the torrent. Switch to earthnet cable to download the actual file, movie etc.

I know there are workarounds, Im asking for a fix for the ethernet issue.

It does, but they fixed it recently. Can get on to the unmentionable sites using tor though

    Not sure what this means.
When I try to use showbox to cast to any device it keeps prompting me to download MX player..

Probably because you are trying to play 720p from the wrong server.

    Any other workarounds?
I've a HTPC that I use for TPB and it's Ethernet only.

Only discovered it last night so haven't had a chance to fully investigate it yet

Changing the DNS to 8.8.8.8 is the cure if you're on WiFi...

Already using it the last 12 months....hadn't realised that using different servers from within showbox would cause it to behave dofferntly

    So terrents are all blocked?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,061 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

Dont know about terrents but torrents are fine if you change your DNS to 8.8.8.8 as posted earlier.

I thought these works only on wifi, turns out that it works on lan too. Thanks a lot.

Have they gone harder on the blocking? It took a while to find a TBP proxy that would work, and when I did, I can't get uTorrent to open the relevant link. Any ideas?

    Use magnet links maybe?

Actually, it looks like it was a problem with that one particular item, rather than a general problem - but thanks for the suggestion anyway.
