A 2's card...

I just want to know if 1) anyone has a breeze what I'm on about by the thread title and 2) if it is implemented in your club.

I had an issue whereby I was returning to a well known golf club in Leinster (don't worry mods I won't name the club) for their weekly open singles stableford competition. I had played there 6 weeks or so previously in the same comp and managed to fluke myself two 2s in the process. Signed card, entered in the computer etc etc.

So when I entered the pro shop on my return I inquired in the pro shop about my 2s money. Gave him my name and the date of the comp. He comes back empty, and proceeds to ask me if I filled in my 2's card to which my response is what is a 2's card. I've been playing golf 15+ years at a relatively decent standard and apart from a hiatus from the game in my college years I've always been a member of a club albeit I've moved around a bit. So I'd never heard of such a thing as a 2's card at which point he asks me to follow him to where the cards are handed in and shows me what is basically an egg cup with a small piece of white paper in it that has a box for each of the par 3 holes on the course (it's actually just occurred to methat you're eligible for the 2's with a 2 of any kind). Anyway he tells me that this needs to be filled in to claim your 2 and points at a piece of folded over A4 paper that is taped to the wall that explains this but I mean you'd never look at this piece of paper, it's not like it is prominent in anyway.

So this just struck me as a bit of an advantage for the members in the open comp as they'll know of the system but it was never explained to me or my playing partners. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it but to say it left me slightly annoyed at the system at the time would be very true.

So I guess back to my original questions, ever heard of it and is it implemented at your club?

  • Nope not used in my club, never heard of it before. Sounds unnecessary doesn't it?

If they took your money for the 2s then they also had a responsibility to advise u of their mad procedure

If you follow there procedure, will they not have to refer back to card to make sure there's a two on it and it's signed and u entered the comp and all that?? Seems pointless to me. Does the computer not pick out the twos anyway.

Yep, heard and seen it in a few places but I'm not of the level where I feel the entry fee is worthwhile

    We have a 2's competition.

You pay the 2 euro and we have a sign in sheet for the 2s piece

You can pay, but if you haven't signed then no joy

The narrower a man’s mind, the broader his statements.

Sounds a bit over complicated. We just hand 2 euro over to the pro. He marks your name on the sheet.

No further action required except to check the results sheet to see how much you've won!!!!

Fill the bit of paper in, put in their egg cup the next time you are there and they will have to go back check the details and honor your 2 surely.

We operate such a 2's card. This instance is quite clearly not my club though (thankfully) as our card is blue :o and we don't have any open competitions. It is about the size of 2 credit cards stuck together and the bundle of them sits right beside the course scorecards in the pro shop. It has a box for each par 3 and also an "other" box. The card must be signed and witnessed as a normal score card.

The system has been there forever. I suppose it stems back to the good old days before computers. I know from society, it is a pain in the arse looking through the cards to identify all the 2's, so if there is a separate card for it, it just makes it easier for the administrators. As far as I know, we have to do a separate card for each 2 we get, but it's been so long since I got a 2.........:(

However, in the modern era of computers it surely it is not needed anymore but the system remains until someone in power decides to do away with it I guess. It doesn't bother me or any member in my club, but as the OP says, we are members, so we know all about it. Also, we don't have open comps as I said, so if you are playing in a comp in Greystones and you are not a member, you will at least be with one to keep you on the straight and narrow :D

I see what you did there ;)

Yeah it just all seems completely pointless now with the computer being in every club. I did feel like pointing that out to the pro but let it go as I knew it was pointless to argue the case. Red tape is red tape and few places do it better than golf clubs.

Poor performance on the clubs behalf not to offer you your prize. They were happy to take your money...on a regular basis by the sounds of it..... So they should honour the 2's prize
