Was driving past a car repair/service place earlier today and noticed they had an "Authorised NCT Repair Centre" sign complete with NCT logo. Have the NCT done some kind of deal with approved centres or is the place as I expect chancing their arm?

    Chancing their arm I'd say.
NCT is a private testing entity and I doubt they have any right to authorise garages for repairs.
In fact I'd like to stop in and have a chat, is this place in Galway?

Is it definitely the actual NCT logo and not something mocked up to look like it at a glance but with differences?

I wonder do they have a replica of the NCT test lane and all that expensive equipment or is a case of a guy walking round your car shaking his head and pointing at things.

    Yes 100% the NCT logo.

In fairness most good garages would have NCT level equipment.

"Authorised NCT repair centre" is just a phrase they are spinning. I suppose all they need is a qualified mechanic to be authorised to repair NCT fails.

A bit like "authorised puncture repair centre" all you need is a tyre guy.

I don't think it's a protected phrase. Hence any Tom, Dick or Harry can be "authorised repair guy", they just make it up.

I would challenge it as misleading advertising to be honest. If they are stating "authorised NCT." They present the expectation that any repairs undergone do not require re-evaluation at an NCT centre. On top of their being no such thing.

The logo would be protected under trademark legislation whereas calling yourself 'NCT authorised/approved' would be difficult to challenge on the basis that the claim would be too vague and (in my book) anyone falling for such a claim deserves to be ripped off.

That's like me saying "I'm an authorized Boards poster", means nothing. Guys chancing their arm I reckon.

As regards having NCT level equipment,I've been told that few if any garages are
capable of doing the Side-Slip Alignment or Suspension Test. Any truth in that I wonder?

I would say there is a lot of truth in it. I've never seen similar equipment in any indy, although I'm sure someone, somewhere, has a "bells and whistles" setup in their workshop.

Doesn't even have to be a 'qualified' mechanic. Sure what's a piece of paper worth?

Was passing this place at the weekend and the "Authorised" text is overwritten now with the company name, someone must have had a word with them.
