I'm sceptical about these online fundraising websites, but in fairness it's usually for a good cause (marathon for charity, for example)

As of late, i've notice people chancing their arm, quite cheeky.

Facebook threw up a gem.... a gofundme.com page for some German wan to repair her camper van so she can go travelling through Ireland!

    I can't tell if it's a p1sstake or not.

So come on AH, can you beat that? Ever come across someone with a fundraising page to go on holiday? (of course we have), or maybe to get plastic surgery so they can look all pretty??

    Can I link?

Remember Dylan Roof, the nutjob who shot dead nine people in a church in Charleston?

Afterwards, his sister launched a GoFundMe campaign. Not to help the victims' families...nope it was to finance her wedding & honeymoon.

Fund my once-in-a-lifetime trip to Machu Picchu for the poor babies with the sore eyes.

What!? You don't want to help? Why do you want the children to be blind?

She had ever right to have a page for that. seems its gone now though due to people and their opinions.

For the record, no she's not hot.

FFS, she bought an oul' campervan that was about to blow up so she could travel round Ireland with her dog who is about to croak... i'll give that a miss.

The likes of gofundme has given moochers and chancers an online platform.
Even celebrities are getting involved. The best one I ever seen was Scott Hall, aka the professional wrestler known as Razor Ramon back in the old WWF days in the 90s.

in 2013, Hall posted to indiegogo asking for $80,000 for hip replacement. Sure here is the link https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/we-can-rebuild-him#/
It's sad to read that Hall has a pacemaker and can barely walk due to arthritis but there is just one tiny little detail....

...Hall, who legitimately pissed so much money away on booze and drugs is still a millionaire.

Yeah some rich American tosser is asking the Mexican government to fund a big wall around the US border. His name's Donald something or other. I'm sure he won't get far though......... OH WAIT.

As long as its transparent I don't have a problem with any of this. Can't see why anyone would have a problem with it tbh

There's a guy in the States.....self titled 'fat guy on a bike' who has a page to fund him cycling east coast to west or something for the love of a good woman and to lose weight. Problem is hes barely got outta state in months. And is heavier than ever and eating fast food by the tonne. Cycles for 2 mile and stays in a (funded ) motel for a month. Hes got like 16k and ppl are still falling for it! Scam artist. Id link it if I could.

To be fair, he has warned us on multiple occasions that he is a Bad Guy.

Along similar lines to crowdfunding are those websites like Workaway. We need someone to run our farm or guesthouse while we go on holidays or paint our entire house. Just pay somebody to do it and stop exploiting people in the name of 'cultural exchange'.

OP.. So what, if they're doing nothing illegal move on, no one is forcing you to contribute..

I might even put one up myself, pay for my car insurance :) any takers..

Seconded. Can't see why anybody would be bothered. They are at least being honest about it.

Can't see why anybody would give them any money either though.

A girl I worked with in Canada, real hippy dippy type, decided to go travelling to South America. While there, the dingbat had her bag stolen off the back of her chair while eating dinner. I say dingbat because she had all her money in it.

As in, all her money. For her entire trip.

She didn't want to go home, so launched a GoFundMe to finance the rest of her travels. I defriended her at that point.

That family that were on This Morning last week, who are raising theirs kids "off grid", their daughter píssed on the set, have a GFM page looking for donations so they can relocate to Costa Rica so they can be self sufficient.

I'd also lump the professional holiday makers into this like the cycling enthusiasts going across America raising money for "insert charity here", they must raise £2500 to cover costs, how much did they raise? - £2512

Honestly the people who do these kinds of "charity holidays" are scum. Taking advantage of people's generous nature and charitable spirit so they can climb mount Kilimanjaro or unicycle around Tibet. ****ing scam artists.

The problem isn't the scroungers setting up these funding pages. It's the people giving them money. It's their fault these pages exist.

Ah yizzer all a bunch of begrudging naysayers sitting at home eating Lidl crisps while watching streamed movies off some dodgy android box that your mate Anto said is "deadly" and gets you all "the latest movies in HD" only for you to realise the Lidl crisps don't taste as nice and the latest movies in HD were filmed on a HD camera by some punter in the cinema in the middle east

Joking aside. I still fail to see the issue here as long as it's transparent. I'd happily sponsor someone that I know and liked if they were doing something that had any of the following merits.

    * There is a charity or community beneficiary regardless of the amount
    * How the funding is being spent
    * it means the person I know is getting up off their arse and making something of their life beyond watching Netflix.
    * it looks like fun
