    M. Night Shyamalan going back to full production after the low budget The Visit. Looks okay, worth a watch? :o

can we all put in spoilers what we think the twist will be and mucho credito to the one who gets it.

So put on your most Shyamalanananananaa hats and think of the twist

My guess is *the beast* is not one of the split personalities but an actual other character, but we are led through out the film to think its a darker personality in Kevin until the end when he is killed and its revealed its in the room with her or something

The IFI are doing a preview of this on December 14th,more than a month before it opens. The reviews are really good,so should be worth a look:

Just back from seeing this and I have to say it was really very good. James McAvoy is, imo, one of the most underrated actors working in film today and he outdoes himself here. It's a shame he's been completely overlooked this awards season.

Suspenseful, dark and even funny in places, this is Shyamalan (thankfully) back on form. It does get slightly preposterous in parts, but there's more depth to it than your average damsel in distress thriller and the film never drags. If you hang on for the scene after it fades to black and the end title appears, there's a nice self referential nod to another Shyamalan film of days gone by...

All in all, highly reccommended. 8/10

Saw this last night. Shama-lama-ding-dong is now on a two film roll with this and "the visit". Both were enjoyable, creepy thrillers that aren't afraid to laugh at themselves.

Don't get me wrong, Split is no classic and does have its flaws but overall it works. McEvoy seemed to be having a ball playing all the various characters. His mannerisms and accents are on point. I thought McEvoy was one of the top actors in the business once I saw him in "Inside I'm Dancing" with a flawless Dublin accent. People from Dublin can't even pull off a decent Dublin accent on film (roysh!).

One plot hole that niggled me was:
If one of the personalities was constantly emailing the therapist for an emergency meeting to tell her everything why didn't they just put what was going on into the email?

Let down in the final act but up until that point it was top notch. Felt like a missed opportunity really. McAvoy was excellent.

Saw it at the weekend, had only seen the trailer, really enjoyable for something I knew nowt about
pants were almost shat when "that" music started up, there were a lot of very confused kiddies (i.e people in their 20s) in the cinema when BW made his appearance.

And yes, after the last few dogs of movies, Shamalamadingdong was very much back on form, I think the low budget genre suits him, forces the bugger to actually do something interesting for sod all money (cos he's self financing them now).

Shylamans movies give me a strange feeling. I never really enjoy watching any of them but I am still intrigued and buy into the story as you know there will be a pay off. This case was no different and the payoff was spectacular. I was totally blindsided by it.

I was never a fan of Shyamalan, not even the Sixth Sense, but I did like Unbreakable. I've not been very tolerant of the rest of his output. Thankfully this was a good and enjoyable film and
I'm delighted that the twist it that it ties into Unbreakable, creating a villain for Bruce Willis for a future film.
James McEvoy is great in it and also a good turn from Anya Taylor Joy.

    Why call him Shallyman ??

I didn't care for this, I guess I went in expecting a horror movie but it's really a Thriller, very little horror which was disappointing.

Finally got to see and wasn't disappointed. Got goosebumps during the spoiler, quality twist alright, did NOT see that coming.....McAvoy was impressive too, should get an oscar nod at least for it.

All Shyamalan's movies to me seem to be half good and half bad where I really dig the good part but ultimately let down by the bad. It's like he's had a good idea but never fully though it through.

Anyway the trailer for Split looks good so will go and see this one. Agree with the comments re McAvoy and he seems like a really nice guy as well.

I think it's probably more how old are you rather than where were you, after all, it's now a 17 year old movie.

As for the unmentionable, he's barely in it, just about qualifies as a walk on cameo

I think your must be thinking of a different movie. The movie stars Samuel L Jackson and Willis.

Anyway It's not his acting skills I like him for it's cause I've always fancied the arse off him :D

Saw my Dad today and he said it was good. He was very tempted to give away the twist. He tends to do that! He ruined The Sixth Sense for me  :)

Anyway I like the trailer, looking forward to watching this.

I guessed the twist within the first 1 minute of one of his movies. I'm sure everyone did it was that bad of a movie. Thankfully I've forgotten the name of it, all I can recall is that Adrian Broady and Sigourny Weaver starred.

Loved MNS early films like the sixth sense, unbreakable, signs, and the village, I haven't seen the visit. This was very entertaining aswell and McAvoy was great, I wasn't to gone on the nod to a previous film at the end, I mean what was the point? It was very marvel, Are they going to make a crossover movie lol.

The main issue I had with it was the lack of a twist, compared to his other movies it was very predictable there was no awe moment, unless I missed something?

Anyway a very good fairly straightforward thriller 8/10

    there were two twists
    a) the lad who seemed to be insane, was actually insane but the beast in his mind was real and could actually climb walls, take bullets skin et cetera (or as above ethchethera :D)

    b) you thought you were watching a small horror/thriller, you were actually watching a super villan origin story.

I never doubted that the beast was real, it seemed to me to be the most probable outcome, I was hoping the twist would be that the girl also had a super human split personality and that it would reveal itself when he attacked her.

Horror/thriller and super villan original story are not mutually exclusive labels.

So ya reckon there will be a sequel?

I don't know, think it stood well alone as a movie.

Well the advertising and poster itself allude that this would happen so not really a twist for me, which is why I think MNS did a service to himself, more so for doing what he did at the end and keeping that a secret. I can't think of whether it has been done before but it is very clever and nifty to
franchise build, for want of a better word, this way.

Shyamalan on record as saying it was always in his head the tie in and a future movie.

Saw this tonight, not impressed. As I hadn't seen Unbreakable the twist at the end went completely over my head, although the movie had lost me before that anyway. I think it started off well and went further and further downhill as the action intensified. James McAvoy was great though, and it's also nice to see that there's life after Skins for Jessica Sula. Overall it's a 5/10 from me.

McAvoy was great in this, but after a strong first half it meandered its way into a boring and treacle-slow ending. The backstory for the girl was extremely unsubtle IMO, and the therapist was a terrible character encumbered with some appalling expository dialogue. The Unbreakable link does act as an explanation for what happens in the film, but IMO came far too late to retain my interest.

All in all, a strong start that degenerated into a wasted opportunity.

I hadn't watched Unbreakable beforehand so we didn't really get the link at the time, but we watched it when we got home and it was a little confusing.
girls in the diner watching the news report.
reporter talking about the split personalities and one of the girls says something like "isnt that like that guy in the wheelchair?".
    brucey answers "Mr Glass".

But.. Mr Glass wasn't like that at all? Felt like a forced link. Or am I remembering it incorrectly

I took it as being more of a
"in this universe, superpowers and supervillains exist"
sort of thing. Alas, by the time it rolled around the bed had been thoroughly soiled ;)

The comparison the waitress was making was only in regards to them both having strange names. It was still pretty forced tho, they could have done it a bit more nonchalant.

Complete opposite opinion to the one above. Went in not expecting a whole lot to be honest. Very pleasantly surprised. I loved how this built up tension, I enjoyed the pacing - but ultimately it all hinged on McAvoy and he was superb.

    M. Night's best since Unbreakable. 4/5*

Watchable movie for Mc Evoy but the ending is fairly ****.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

I have to say I thought it was pretty OK (McEvoy is undeniably spectacular especially towards the end) but disliked the ending and direction it took in its final act - not a bad film, but I really can't understand the massive acclaim it's been getting.
