Electric Central Heating

Have an old solid wall house that I need to install central heating in. At present there are only fireplaces.

There is no gas in the area. Therefore I guess my options are Oil, Electric & Solid Fuel.

Its a town house, no back garden for an oil tank, so i'm assuming Oil Central Heating isnt an option?

What are my options for solid fuel? A log burner with a boiler is it? Any advice on what I should look in to?

Electric Central Heating is obviously easier to install/ maintain seeing its in modern apartments. I'm just wondering how expensive is it to run. It would appear 4 times the price of gas. Gas is 6c kWh and Electric 24c kWh.

Now maybe its more efficient, therefore you'd use less units. Guessing there might be modern storage heater options (make use of low night time rate)? Anyone have any experiences?

    Thank you all.

If you have a big renovation coming up, try to insulate so you need as little heat as possible.

A lot depends on how big your house is and how much energy it will take to heat.

You have a storage problem. Solid fuel also requires significant storage space (as well as labour and equipment).

Solid fuel heating is a lot of work. A log burner with a boiler is not particularly cheap when the installation costs are taken into account.

It is possible to install an oil tank indoors, though i have never come across this having been done (see http://www.oftec.org/consumers/faqs-on-oil-storage-tanks)

Storage heaters are an option. They aren't really a great option, but they might work for you, especially if the house is quite small and if it doesn't require too much heat (for example, if it gets winter sun, and if it has adjoining houses on the two sides) and is very well insulated. If you use the house a lot during the day, they may also suit better. As you suggest, more modern storage heaters are available.

You can get such a thing as an electric boiler. It is not a great option for the reason you have explained (although electricity is not quite that expensive). Modern gas boilers are easily 90 percent efficient, so the difference in cost is very real.

Can you find out what the neighbours are doing?
