Cancelling Holiday with Travel Agent

    Hi
I recently booked a trip to New York for 2017 with my travel agent; I called to give credit card number for deposit 2 weeks ago. I was checking my bank account on a daily basis however the deposit didn't show up on my account; I contacted the travel agent this week to ask was something wrong as deposit hadn't appeared; he confirmed that he must have taken a digit down wrong and was meaning to contact me about it, but reassured me that the trip was booked.
As it happens, I may unfortunately have to cancel the trip, and I feel it must have been a coincidence that deposit wasn't actually taken, but I am just wondering, before I contact the Agent, are they likely to insist I pay the deposit anyway? Considering I booked the trip Friday two weeks ago, and it was only when I contacted him this week that he said he was meaning to contact me about the card number. Surely he could of contacted me around the time he was trying to book the holiday with the card number that he had??
Thanks in advance for your help :)

All depends on their terms and conditions, best contact them as soon as you can before they put things in motion.

Travel agents don't use your credit card details to book, they use their own accounts and take their payment from your card.

The agent acted in good faith booking for you, so of course you're liable to pay the deposit and he would be right to pursue you for it if you fail to do so.

Thanks a million for taking time to reply; I am not sure how a travel agent works so this is good information, and fair. Thanks again

There are a few questions on this.
Did you actually sign a booking form legally committing to pay the cost of the holiday? Or is there any communication not verbally to confirm the holiday?

Didn't sign a booking form; I booked over the phone and gave him my credit card. That was the end of it. It was only after a week went by and still no sign of the of the deposit on my account that I contacted him and asked what the story was. He replied the next day that he had a digit missing in card number and that he was going to contact me but that it was still booked. I then replied that actually, it must be fate that the deposit wasn't taken as I may need to cancel. He has now replied that he has actually paid for the flights in full (€1050) and I will need to pay that, when the deposit was €600?

Hmm tricky one, you'll defiantly owe the deposit, even if you didn't sign anything it's a verbal contract! You agreed to purchase the holiday.

I would question if they have paid for the flights. As the deposit would always be at least the flight price if they are instant putchase. Did he send you details of the booking? Feel free to pm me and I will see if I can advise you further.

Call the travel agent and ask?
