Communal Sky Dish

    Hello Everyone,

    Just like to see of anyone has any experience in my problem mentioned below;

I moved into a new apartment with a communal sky dish. We have a single cable coming from the dish (fibre cable) which comes into a device called a Fibre IRS GTU. Basically it looks like a splitter, one cable input from the dish which then splits into two cables (live and record). When i connect it all up, im still receiving now satellite signal.

So just a little background about our subscription. Its the landlords subscription which she has been running for years, so there is no change in subscription from tenant to tenant. We were left with all the above cables/boxes etc, so the setup has been previously running. Just to reiterate we have the following cables/boxes.

    1. Sky + Box
    2. One Fibre IRS GTU
    3. One power supply for the Fibre IRS GTU
    3. Two output cables
    4. One scart
    5. Connection to WIFI
    6. Sky viewing card

Just on the splitter, we have one input (which is fine) and four outputs. The sky dish goes into the input side and the two cables (live and record) go into the 4 outputs, which then go into the back of the sky box. Does it matter about the arrangement of the two cables which connect into the four outputs

Please see link below of a picture of the Fibre IRS GTU

Would you know if the condition of the coaxial cables could make a difference? Currently they have no screw top on them . i.e they cannot be screwed into any of the connections. I just have the them sitting in the connection

You require an F-connector at each end of the cable, should be available in local diy/hardware/ electrical stores

When fitting the connector ensure the outer metal braid doesn't touch the inner core wire, have a look at this video which show you how to properly make the connection

You can get them pre-made also, example, http://www.powercity.ie/index.php?par=30-70-DV6002&action=moreinfo

Thank you very much for the reply. Looked at the video, seems handy enough.

Im just trying to rule out the cables altogether. Would i even get a small signal without the f connector. If not, then i know i need to attach an f connector

    Cheers

Yes, the cables need to be connected properly.

You know you need to attach a F connector because the previous poster told you so and provided a video showing you how to do it.
