Hi guys I have a quick question, I'm currently doing a course with FAS in one of their training centers and when the course finish I go back onto the Unemployment Benefit. I'm just wondering how long does it take for the payment from Social welfare to kick in , does anyone know ?? Is it immediate or is it just like it is at the start you wait few days and they back pay you ? Thanks for the reading and answers in advance :)

    Hi Jessica77,

Can you confirm if you were definitely on Jobseekers Benefit before you started the course?

That payment is based on your PRSI contributions and usually lasts for 9 months, its not means tested.

Generally speaking, if you are on JB and you take up a course your JB is frozen at that point and can be reactivated later to use the remainder of your JB claim. So for example if you were on JB for 3 months, you should have about 6 months left.

Just remember, JB is not an automatic entitlement.... you must be able to show that you are genuinely seeking work and willing to accept any reasonable offer of employment. JB gives you the right to apply for a non-means tested payment, but does not guarantee payment until you can 'prove' you meet the qualifying conditions.

If you run out of JB you can apply for Jobseekers Allowance, JA, but this is means tested.... income, savings, property other than own home, partners income from employment/self employment, etc. Still has the same Genuinely Seeking Work requirement as JB.

That said, apply for the remainder of your JB payment immediately after completion of your course.... and don't forget, you could be 'activated' and sent to JobPath to help you find work - either Seetec or Turas Nua.... check out posts on boards for information on both!

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

You working with Turas Nua you seem to be plugging it on other posts as well

    Hi X22Report,

No, I don't work for either of the JobPath providers or the DSP, and to be honest I wouldn't call providing information, and naming companies providing those services as 'plugging', especially considering they are in the public arena and there is no self-selection process with these companies - the person is sent from DSP to them, the person cannot 'opt' to engage with those companies.

As you will see from my posts I mention both companies and in this one refer to 'posts' on boards.ie - that includes other peoples posts on those services as well, given that experience and feedback can vary based on experience and personal opinion. I have also included references to other organisations such as Citizens Information for assistance and support where issues/problems or questions might arise. In this instance I would be happy to 'plug' any service which provides a free and confidential information and support service to people who need help.

The notification on 'activation' on the post above is just a reminder that this can happen, and people need to be aware of this and how it can affect eligibility for their primary Jobseekers payment.

    Regards,
