I applied for DPS card about 2 weeks ago as myself, partner & baby lost medical cards. I stupidly thought we would get up to expiry date on them after finding out we weren't eligible anymore, so completely my own fault for not applying for DPS card in time. My son is on a hypoallergenic formula which costs €45 a tin, so we have spent well over the €144 limit this month. Any info I can find online about refunds only refers to if you've used more than one pharmacy a month. Does anyone know if there is any system in place for the period while waiting for card? Did find something on HSE document about retrospective eligibilty but the refund form says nothing about this.

Drugs payment scheme is not means tested and is open to everyone. Contact your LHO for info.

You can only apply for a refund if you have an active card. Refunds aren't generally issued until you have one.

Oh I knew it wasn't means tested, just wondering what to do while waiting for it but my chemist said it has gone active now anyway so all good, thanks.

Thanks 1moo345. Went to pick up his formula during week & chemist said it had gone active, although when I went to get prescription for myself it hadn't.

No salary limit, just have to be residing in Ireland for a year already and intending to stay for a year. Details here, including link to application form

    HI OP

your pharmacist is a great help in this area. they can advise and assist.

I reccomend you just chat to them next time you are in store -ask for pharmacist, and chat.

You should drop completed form into your Local Health Office or post it to them. You will find your local office in this list http://www.hse.ie/eng/services/list/1/LHO/
No email addresses are given for the offices.

Pharmacists can emergency register you if you're medication is going to be expensive so that it's active for that pharmacy there and then.

It may be possible to get the pharmacist to put through the number of tins that you've used for this month and claim for them that way. Then he can refund you anything over the 144 Euro that you've paid for the calender month.

Also worth remembering that you can claim 20% back with the med1
