So this spider has been hanging around my letter box.

I'm posting this because whenever I approach the letterbox his front two legs go in the air and starts shaking the web.

Anyone know what kind it is?

Chances are it's Araneus diadematus, the European Garden spider/Cross Orb Weaver spider just like the one in the first post. The banding on the legs would suggest it's an Araneus species, and A. diadematus is by far the most common one you will see.

Can I jump in on this with a spider you might be able to identify, it's on the front wall of my house
Might not be a great picture

I remember seeing wolf spiders and big bat eating ones in Hong Kong. They. Put their webs across paths to catch the bats. Walking down a path in the dark was always worrying.

Funny you should say that, that spider had its web slung between the side of the house and the garden wall, about 8 foot apart. Web only the size of a dinner plate though.

You're easily scared if a common garden spider is a nightmare. Harmless little things.

Thanks for that, wasn't sure what it was, my dog has a habit of catching and eating anything that moves. Chasing flies around the garden all evening

True - but there is no accounting for arachnophobia! And we are now in the worst time of year for arachnophobes as the big fat males of various species start to go wandering looking for females. I wont feel safe until late December.

Yeah, Ive no fear of spiders but on Saturday morning i was pulling back the curtains and a very large hairy house spider was on the inside right next to my fingers, I did get a quick fright :D as I wasnt expecting the little fecker. But just scooped him up and put him outside before my other half had a mild heard attack.

It's the very same species (A. diadematus) as the others I.D.'d in this thread.

He sounds angry. Sure they are probably only bills and junk mail anyway, just let him keep them.
