Hi guys. I'm on receipt of JSA for many months. I'm living in a private accommodation for 7 months alrwdgy and rent is increasing from 120w to 165w. Can anyone tell me how long does it take to get rent allowance. And how much will I pay towards rent from myself when straying to get paid? And also I'm going back to full time education and I'm about to apply for BTEA. How long will the processing time take? Will my JSA be cut and then after start receiving BTEA or it will be only transferring benefit?

    Thanks.

    Hello daniellesouza,

    Application Processing Time:
The processing of an application for Rent Supplement can take anywhere from a couple of weeks, to a worst case scenario of more than 4-6 weeks depending on the circumstances i.e. processing, review of application, any issues with landlord/accommodation etc.. Have you tried contacting Threshold for any information or advice - Cork 021 4278848 , Dublin 1890 334 334 or Galway 091 563080?

    Amount:
Differing Rent Limits apply based on the area you live in - see the Citizens Information website for details of the limits/amounts.

Once the amount of Rent Supplement you qualify for has been worked out, it will be reduced by a minimum of €30. This is because you must pay at least €30 a week towards your rent. You may pay more than €30 because you are also required to contribute any additional assessable means that you have above the appropriate basic Supplementary Welfare Allowance rate towards your rent. If you are one of a couple and are claiming Rent Supplement you must pay at least €40 a week towards your rent.

    Back to Education:
If you have a rent supplement you can 'bring it with you' onto the BTEA, as with the medical card. If you do not have Rent Supplement before you take up the BTEA it could prove difficult to secure the Rent Supplement after you start on the BTEA - its best to have it and bring it with you, rather than look for it on BTEA alone.

Any additional income you have from employment/part-time work on BTEA over €75 could affect the amount you receive/pay.

    Hope this proves useful.

    Regards,
