I feel the move of this competition has impacted any buildup of enjoyment for me. Really wish there was something that made it stand out, like having it as matchplay.

They've only moved it by a couple of weeks. Why would they have it as match play, particularly since they stopped it being a match play event years ago because it wasn't good for TV.

Just feel it's too close to the Open. Obviously not a permanent move so not a permanent thing.

Its current format makes it a poorer US Open, making it somewhat distinct would benefit it. Masters and the Opens are distinctive, USPGA isn't imo.

Fair enough , but how do you make it distinct without making it match play (which won't happen)?

Only way I could think would maybe have it on American links courses (Whistling Straits, Shinnecock Hills type). Be similar to the Open but would look rather distinctive!

Still going to enjoy the event though, some good pairings for the first two days.

Combine it with the European and Asian Tours PGA and make it a worldwide event that moves around

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 867 ✭✭✭thewobbler

Maybe leave it as it is?

Ask any player in history which tournament they wanted to win and it'll be 4th place in every list.

Always coming 4th in such a contest isn't something to be ashamed of.

    ---

The make up of the majors isn't decided by the PGA or the media or sponsors. It's a virtue of history.

Sometimes history does just get it right.

I hate any events out in Asia. All money driven and spectators sparse. And not being able to watch the weekend of a major live would really annoy me.

Didn't Keegan Bradley say it was the one he wanted to win most after he won it.

That's because his father is a PGA professional.

I know , I was just commenting that a recent winner said it was the one he wanted to win most of all and seemed genuine when he said it.

Not saying it's considered the same as than the others for everyone.

I'd question the continue inclusion of the top 20 from the PGA National Championship, the vast majority of whom miss the cut year in, year out. This exemption/invitation category surely deprives 20 more deserving (and a lot more talented) tour professionals from the event. I know the PGA of America owns this tournament but surely the record of the players who qualify in this category is so bad that it needs to be removed or severely reduced - like to the top 5 or 10?

All it serves every year is to painfully highlight the vast gulf between the professionals playing on the main world tours and those in US clubs and academies.

I don't begrudge them one shot a year at it.

How about trying to figure out who will win this week at Baltrusol ?
It is going to be hot and humid -- spectators being advised to bring there own water ( +salt ) .
Shane Lowry might consider shaving off that beard to avoid heat stroke .
Often won by an unheralded American ?
    Maybe Kevin Chappel?

Dave Stockton going to be on off the ball in a few minutes talking about Rory's putting. Should be decent

Just switched on some live coverage whilst on a break... After a monster drive by McIlroy, he leaves himself a wedge with 117 yards to go. Proceeds to miss the green. Groundhog day.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,378 ✭✭✭HighLine

And then walks off with a bogey. So poor after splitting the fairway with a monster drive. Been his story for a long time now.

Well my point is that it has been this way for over a year and for someone of his talent, his wedge play is shockingly poor.

    APPROACHES FROM 225-250 YARDS 40' 4" Rank - 3
    APPROACHES FROM 100-125 YARDS 19' 8" Rank - 84
    APPROACHES FROM 125-150 YARDS 24' 6" Rank - 148

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,150 ✭✭✭✭LuckyGent88

    Another bogey for Rory.

That bogey on 13 was just classic Rory this year with a shocking wedge shot.

Combined with his poor putting he hasn't a hope unless he can improve those stats.

Does anyone know why the Sky coverage only starts at 6pm? Is this another Augusta thing?

I assume that's when the American broadcasters start live coverage which is who they get their feed from

Good man Rory, just play yourself out of the tournament in the first round again!!!

When you out in the early groups with perfect conditions they really need to be shooting under par.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,835 ✭✭✭dennyire

    Rory plus 3 after 9

Very disappointing stuff from Rory, 8 shots off the lead already, really thought he a chance this week.

Another ****e wedge shot on the 1st. Day and mickelson 50 yards behind him off the tee and then end up 15ft closer than Rory. That's simply not good enough.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,378 ✭✭✭HighLine

And same story on the 1st (his 10th) for Rory... a 359!!! yard drive in the middle of the fairway... 114 yards left and hits it outside 20ft. Par.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,077 ✭✭✭✭vienne86

This putting from Rory is awful to watch - he's way out of sorts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,150 ✭✭✭✭LuckyGent88

Bye bye Rory!!! Has lost his head now. Looks extremely frustrated. Already 9 shots back of the lead.

Phil on +4 now as well, but I'd have more hope for him turning things around than Rory, who's getting really angry with himself.

It was the one I always wanted to win growing up because of the Wanamaker. :pac:

It has to be one of the most beautiful trophies in all of world sport, not just golf.

Not for the first time in his career he is clearly showing that his lack of mental resolve when things are not going well is an all too familiar trait.

Very disappointing as a fan to see him under perform. :(

Fair play to Phil for fighting his way back to +1.

Rory simply doesnt do fight backs. He throws the toys out of the pram and gives in. May well shoot something good tomorrow and indulge himself in the 'poor me' routine with rueful smiles as if fates cruelly letting him play good golf now when he is out of the reckoning, rather than recognise that it is his own mental weakness that keeps bombing him out of contention.

Lads in afternoon facing a much harder test. Anything around level or 1 under would be a very good score.

Kaymer going very well and has been in great form.

Still a lot of big names really struggling this afternoon as well

I thought DJ would go really well on this course, but he's 6 over. Is he knackered after the Open and also playing in Canada last week?

    DJ having an absolute mare!!

I'm not too gone on the course tbh. Greens a bit finicky on some chip shots and the grain in the rough about the only feature on the course.

So stensons caddie had a bet with Stenson if he won a major he had to give up smoking.

Interviewed this week, 5 times a day I really want a smoke I wish Phil had shot a 61 and beat us but it goes away quickly.

Doesn't do fight backs? How many times this year alone has he come from pretty much nowhere on a Sunday to get a top 10?

So many people on here and Irish people in general love to put the boot in on McIlroy. He's a class act but just had a bad day yesterday.

He's only 27 and has won 4 majors. 2 years without one now it looks like but he'll be back. He's not going to win every week
