Spain road trip advice!?

So planning on doing a road drip in Spain the last two weeks of August.

I want to visit Barcelona for a few days as part of this but unsure what route to take thereafter/before.

I like the idea of Santander - Bilbao - San Sebastian - Barcelona but dont know too much about these places really and wonder are they worth visiting?

I also like the idea of visiting Portaventura theme park as I was there many years ago and loved it. This has got me thinking that maybe a route like Barcelona - Cambrils - Valencia - Murcia might be a better route to take.

Have also thought about doing the two routes combined although this would be about 1,200 kms of driving so might be a bit much.

Has anyone traveled around these areas and would recommend any routes to take/places to visit?

We have two weeks for the trip and haven't booked any flights etc yet.

    Thanks in advance.

I did a road trip through France and in to the Spanish Basque Country in June this year. Didn't go to Santander so can't comment. Bilboa and San Sebastián are both excellent cities. SS is on the beach while Bilboa has beaches close by. Both have huge amounts of bars, cafes, restaurants. Gernika is also worth a visit.

Parking in all Spanish cities is at a premium and is expensive. Hotel Record in SS has free parking and is within walking distance of the beach and multiple bars etc. You can travel around the Basque Country on a Dart like train system called Euskutren.

I wouldn't go to Bercelona if up north. It will be very hot and packed in August and driving and parking are a pain in the backside. If you want to go to Catalonia I'd recommend Girona, about an hour from BCN towards France and very close to Costa Brava for beaches.

Food and drink in Bilboa and San Sebastián are excellent and, for us Irish, cheap.

Great advice. I drove from Barcelona to Costa Brava and then Girona in June this year.

You have fantastic beaches, and Girona is a beautiful city roughly 1 hour inland. Great for a day or two.
