I wonder where it was sourced from, lucky if it got through customs in Ireland.

    Why do you say that?

It's a Mikkeller beer in a Mikkeller advent calendar ordered direct from Mikkeller in Denmark to an Irish address.
Literally nothing untoward at all going on here.

Agreed on that. A very nice stout. I seen a couple of different beers being tweeted last night for the 2nd beer so I'd have
to assume the packs are not all the same from here on ?

My 2nd beer was Red Noir by Yellowbelly. It's a dark red ale. It was pretty good actually. Very easy to drink.
I'll keep an eye for it in future.

That was my 2nd one as well, they actually had it on draught in Mother's just before the second closure, very nice beer.
Tonight's one is White hag, chocolate orange pastry stout, not something I'd normally go for, not too bad and the flavours are nice and subtle.

Are there any sour and/or cherry beers normally available worth picking up? I've had some in the past and not been super into them, but maybe that's just because I've had bad ones.

Kinnegar have released one that's quite good. Yellowbelly do a decent passionfruit one and White hag(I think) have a good lemon sour. They really are a love or hate drink though.

I have the Kinnegar one (got it because 1. It's Kinnegar and 2. I like their Brewers at Play series). Will pick up one or two of the White Hag ones as part of the 4/€10 offer when I'm in next.

Ska brew do one called Pink Vapor Stew that is a bit more tart than the Kinnegar 11.
Actually my missus doesn't like sours at all but said she thought the Kinnegar was drinkable, having another one now just to make sure.

Muintearas imperial stout. It was behind Door number 1 of my advent calendar.
Not bad actually. An acquired taste for sure.

I had a few Hope summer seasonal left and they are still so good.

There's a brewery I didn't know existed until I tried Hop on a few months ago, have tried a few of their beers and liked everyone of them.

The delivery is the issue, many boxes of beer have been confiscated by customs as you need a licence to import. There were some comments about this which corrected my knowledge in the supporting craft breweries thread.
Looks like a great box so far.

third barrel Pilot series 03, 04 and 05. The chocolate Chipotle stout and maple bacon porters are both fine if unspectacular, but the salted peanut chocolate milk stout is amazing..... Tastes like peanut m&m's.

The issue on that thread is people using Parcel Motel to get stuff from Britain and elsewhere to subsequently send on to the Free State. That's illegal.

In the case of buying stuff overseas, if they ship it here they have to conform to the excise rules in place. It's precisely these rules and their complications that you see some websites not selling into Ireland at all.

Mikkeller do sell into Ireland and I have to only assume from my POV, are compliant, otherwise why would they bother?

    ---

That being said, it's been an inspired first 3 days. Classic Mikkeller.

Rather a lot of reputable sites and some breweries have sold direct to Ireland without bothering to sort out the Revenue stuff leading to seizures. It rather looks like most other counties don't enforce to quite the same extent we do

Some sites that don't sell here stopped due to seizures.

Have Mikkeler done this legit? Maybe. You've no way of knowing

Currently enjoying wicklow wolf peanut Butter stout. It's absolutely excellent, great balance of chocolate and peanut but without being over powering or overly sweet.

Have nearly finished my white hag box, only have the eggnog ale to finish. Their Mexican hot chocolate stout was awful and should be avoided. Way too much vanilla, was sickly sweet and synthetic tasting.

Absolutely I don't. And I think there is a case of assuming things being intra-EU that it is okay for a lot of breweries.

But I think it's more likely than not.

Just looking on the delivery note on the box that it was sent from PF Services in Flensburg, Germany C/O Mikkeller. So that could be the answer. PF are handling the nitty gritty.

But given Flensburg's proximity to Denmark, it could also be a Mailbox.de type deal.

    I do love Flensburger.

Absolutely amazing beer. Wish I'd gone big on it rather than just a couple of cans. Obviously should mention it's collab with Lough Gill. Wicklow Wolfs recent collabs have been excellent - I really enjoyed the Dot Brew Double Black IPA. Probably said before, but they've had an excellent darker beer specials Autumn and Winter.

Personally, I am just happy it got through and it wasn't confiscated. Everything else was just in terms of a warning/be careful.

Grevensteiner Helles was surprised as I enjoyed it. I usually find this style a little bland but this was nice.

    Oh aye thanks.

The missus bought it so I had no idea it was coming :)

Nearly time to open day 4...

Beer Cloud Advent Calendar day #4: Hopfully Brewing, Waterford. Shinebright IPA at 6%

Another brewery I have never heard of, which is why I am absolutely loving this Advent Box. Anyway, the beer. Moderately hoppy to the nose. I'm trying to figure out whether my glass is frosting up with condensation, or whether it is cloudy (I suspect it is a combination of both). A hint of sourness to the taste, not overpowered with hops or fruit flavours. Nice bite to it.

Hopfully are actually out by Dublin Airport, not Waterford. They do some very tasty beers, get your hands on Graciosa if you can, it's excellent.

Aha! Upon closer inspection of the can, it is brewed by Metalman in Waterford, for Hopfully. I am a big fan of Metalman, so it makes sense.

Their can art is very distinctive and attractive. I've only had Graciosa, but I wouldn't mind picking up some of their others on the basis of the can art alone. But from their social media etc, it feels like they're pitching more of a lifestyle / art brand then a beer brand.

Hopfully actually closed their Dublin brewery last year or thereabouts. They brewed at Lough Gill for a while but are now based at Metalman in Waterford again, where they started.

I think I read that they commission different artists to design each can so they can support local artists. They're definitely eye-catching, but so far I haven't been disappointed by anything of theirs I've tasted, which is the most important thing.

Didn't realise that. Also didn't know they started in Waterford. They certainly get around.

True gypsy brewers! Yeah, they bought the old Metalman brewkit (originally built for Biddy Early) and learned the ways of it in Metalman before moving it to north Dublin. Then they found out why brewing on a 25-year-old cobbled-together brewery isn't a great idea and abandoned it.
