Auto to Manual

I've been driving since I started at 19 back in 2006 and passed my driving test in an Automatic in 2007. I remember waiting almost 1 year for my test and subsequently failing in a really old crappy Manual Petrol Toyota. A short while later I bought an auto car and haven't looked back since I passed the test in it a few months after failing in the manual.

I can drive Manual cars but don't drive them by choice as they add too much stress to driving for me as I'm not ambidextrous so often miss gears or hit the wrong gear particularly on some ridiculous gearboxes as my left hand does not have great coordination.

I've driven all over the world since with automatics and manuals, in asia they tend not to look too much at our ridiculous pink license and I've rented manuals with my autobox licence before; and had the joys of blasting down the autobahn in Germany in both auto and manual cars (friends) are something also I enjoyed. I can drive manuals excellently with LHD as changing gear is a doddle with my right hand.

I'm thinking I'd like to get to get the Manual qualification added to my license as being auto restricted can be cumbersome at time especially if you want to rent a car or drive a friends etc.

Can anybody advise of the procedure of same? Can I just apply for a Learning Permit and sit the test or would I be required to do the Driver Theory Test and take 12 lessons etc?

I travel abroad a good bit so it was just something I'm thinking off, I was thinking I might buy a little junker and use that for the test etc or else rent one.

Assuming you mean you passed the test in Ireland, what you'll have to do is apply for a learner permit (your B theory test from 2006 will still be valid), apply for a test and pass it in a manual car.

Ideally, you'll need access to a manual car to practice in and ideally, use the same car to pass the test. If you can't get insured in a friend of family member's car, it will be a disadvantage but the worst case scenario is that you must pay for lessons and then pay for the rental for a test.

I think there might be a case for committing to manual driving and buying a manual car but that depends on how much cash you have tied up in your current car and also if you are okay with the idea of driving with L plates and needing a fully licenced driver with you while you're waiting for the test...
