Further Education & Accommodation Allowance

    Hello all,

I wonder if anyone can help me at all? I've been trying to find out whether I would be entitled to an accommodation allowance or retain my existing rent allowance where I to relocate to study Horticulture? The course I am interested in is in Westport College of Further Education, however upon asking them, I was told that they do not provide accommodation allowance.

However, upon researching Citizens Information and Welfare.ie online, basically what I have found is the following:

"Apart from evening courses, all FET courses are free and you may be paid a FET training allowance for the duration of your course. You can also claim a meal allowance, an accommodation allowance if you need to live away from home for the duration of the course or a travel allowance if you live 5 km or more from the course centre."

Now, my case officer in the local Intreo advised me earlier that what used to be FAS (now Solas) may still provide accommodation allowances. He told me that a private college (such as Westport College) does not provide accommodation allowances, so I have been looking at the Letterkenny Horticulture course, which is now a Solas run course, so should provide an accommodation allowance of €69.90 per week for an applicant that is relocating to study..

I have been to and fro both my case officer and several colleges that provide Horticulture and I cannot get a straight answer!

My head is basically fried, so any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello dinkle23,

Just following up on your posting...

    Rent Supplement:
You cannot transfer or keep your existing Rent Supplement where you relocate to study. If your move is necessary for jobseeking or education purposes you can make a case when applying for Rent Supplement in a new area, but this cannot be guaranteed. If you are in receipt of a Jobseekers payment from the Department of Social Protection you should speak with your Case Officer in asking if they can support any future application for Rent Supplement in a different area for genuine jobseeking/education reasons.

    Accommodation Allowance:
Short answer - Check with the local ETB (Education and Training Board) website - ETB.ie for the area you are considering moving to. They should be able to advise of any conditions/requirements which might attach to any application for any available accommodation allowance.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
