    Hi lads,

Just looking for some advise on applying oxide paint to corrugated galvanised sheeting. I've been getting different advice from folk, some say just apply it straight on and other have told me a primer is required or it will peeling in a year or so. I tend to agree with the latter, if this is the case could someone recommend a good primer. Also I've been advised to go for the red Douglas Oxide which is an Irish brand. Many thanks.

I am currently scrubbing my now mostly non galvanized tin roof, did one half in the drizzle with steel yard brush having sprinkled on heavy bleach from watering can - to get rid of moss and algae then the rain rinsed away the dirt. That was a week ago and now more edges have lifted on scrubbed surface so got to work with long handled grove steel brush used for cleaning out weeds in paving - works a treat.

The sheds were previously done 18 years ago because the guy who did it calls every year to see if I am flush - so I disappoint him every year I am afraid. I insisted he power washed it those 18 years ago and it has lasted. Preparation is all as they say. I am looking at suppliers on this site and wondering if any one has experience of the green oxide being offered?.

Painting is like farming is like building is like anything someone wants to consider themselves an expert - one guy told me you need to paint your shed every 3 years - wtf! I dont use a primer - never have - it is oxide paint after all.Just cover it well. 18 years ago I didnt put primer on the shed, the tin is still there and so is the colour. I live on very windy and salty Atlantic facing hill so that is proof enough for me.

Important note - I tech screwed old galvanized sheets over perspex window lights - safety first

We have a galvanised corrigated iron (CGI) on our house so I'm a bit fussy about the way its painted.

What I do is pressure wash first then treat any rusty looking areas with a mix of Owtrol and oxide paint 50/50 then do two coats of oxide paint with 10% Owtrol in it. Owtrol is expensive!

What the Owtrol does is make the paint "wetter" so it goes on better, sticks better and penetrates and hardens the rusty areas.

Owtrol also works well to get paint to stick to new galvanised. I expect about ten years out of a decent roof paint job but often leave it longer with no issues. Find the areas in full sun need redoing first.
