Rent Relief Query

    Dear All,

I have been renting my current apartment since Feb 2010 and I have never claimed rent relief. I would really appreciate some guidance on this, I know I'm before the cut off of 7th December 2015. I don't believe my landlord is registered. Is it an easy process and how much would it be worth to me 2010-to current. I'm single and under 55.

    Kindest Regards

You can only go back four years, so that would be the tax year 2012. Any credit due for 2011 and 2010 is lost.

Ideally, you will need your landlords PPS number however if he is not registered as you mentioned, you probably will not be provided with it.

The relief available is capped but may be in the region of €3,600 subject to gross rent paid and income tax paid over the last four years.

And before you get too excited OP, that's €3,600 at the standard rate of tax = €700 odd in tax back. ASSUMING you have actually paid tax in the first instance to result in a repayment.

Thanks so much for the replys

Think you misunderstood what Barney posted. In order to benefit from tax relief on your rent paid, you will need to have paid PAYE tax during the years you are claiming. Its still a common enough issue that people get confused about so it's worth pointing out.
