    Hi All,

My folks have a new Subaru Outback. It has a reversing camera fitted but they hate it and would like to get parking sensors front and rear fitted.
Has anyone any idea where is good to get this done or has any particular brand they could recommend?
    (Kildare/Dublin areas if possible!)

    Thanks!

Carcraft in Fairview will supply and fit them. They charge accordingly though.

The rears are straight forward, they are wired to the reverse bulbs for power but the fronts have to be wired to a switch, otherwise they are constantly on.

    Thanks for reply.

By switch do you mean something automatic that kicks in at slow speed or would it be a manual thing you have to flick on yourself? (Can see them driving into a wall waiting for a beep if they have to do it manually!)

Some systems will activate automatically below a certain speed.

Ring a few local places and see what they offer, how it works and get quotes.

Check your car's colour code, the place can order caps the same colour.

I am in the same position (looking to add parking sensors to a Mondeo).
When you say "ring a few local places", what kind of "places" do this? Sorry to sound thick, but I have never had anything like this done and don't really know where to start looking.

I was quoted €260 for rear only and €530 for front and rear, supplied and fitted. Does that sound expensive?

I got colour coded rear sensors fitted in the end(beeper only) for €175.
Was advised against getting after market front sensors as they don't work as well as built in ones and generally require switch activation when you need them.

Thanks. Where did you get it done?
Are you happy with the results?

Happy so far! They've only been on the car since Wednesday but all good.

I got D.R Car Audio & Security to do it - he offers a mobile service and did it at my work.

I got a camera fitted to my rear bumper on an Octavia, it transmits to my rear mirror when in reverse.
Bought it online and got my local mechanic to fit it.

Most garages will be able to put the standard beeper ones on. Dealer put rear ones on for me before buying a mondeo. 250 for them. Just a note to tell them to put them in the proper OEM place, i.e at the very bottom (red circles in the pic). Forgot to tell the fella to put them at the bottom and he put them where the blue spots are in the pic. A lot will put them in the middle of the bumper unless specifically told.

I don't understand why companies put cameras instead of parking sensors. I always prefer sensors since it engages another sense, hearing, while reversing. Cameras look cool but you already have mirrors and on really dark wet days where the camera would come in useful it's usually covered in muck!

Completely disagree. The camera on VW's is behind the badge, only pops out when required so it's never dirty. I find it invaluable for reversing into a spot and trying to get as close to the wall as possible - without actually hitting it! I have the sensors too and if I was relying solely on them then I think it's more of a guessing game.

Agree! Bought a new car earlier this year, my husband wanted a higher spec model with the camera. I thought it was a waste but gave in and now wouldn't be without it. Love having it, means I can park in spaces I might have avoided before.

Does anyone use their eyes and judgement anymore? Some clown reversed into my car last week while parking and his lame excuse was that his beeper didn't go off

I agreed above but I do also think people rely on these things too much as well. I'd never rely on the sensors, and just find the camera a good help for judging tighter spaces etc but don't solely use that for parking.

True, your own judgement should obviously take priority but the sensors and camera help immensely if used properly.

    Thanks. Are they working well?
Are you tempted to get the front ones?

Well they could at least offer both as a factory fit option. I was looking at a nissan leaf and the parking sensors they offer are aftermarket.

I had front and rear sensors added as an aftermarket add on to my first car. The dealership arranged for an ICE type guy to turn up with them. They included a front and rear display showing distance in metres. They were far better than any factor fit version I've ever had.

That being said I find reversing cameras to be fantastic.

Working spot on. On over 4 years now, never gave any real bother.

I wouldn't really bother with the front ones, after a week or so I was able to gauge the front of the car and how close I can get before hitting anything.

Got the rear ones as I found the rear of the car very deceiving, still do! (Especially the hatchback). The sloped glass and little boot out the back make it difficult to judge, so I got them on. Don't over rely on them anymore, if I was buying the car again, I probably wouldn't bother with them

The front ones comes in handy though too. Especially when in tight parking garages

Sorry, to be so stupid, but what is ICE?
Do you mind me asking how much you were charged if you remember? Also, when was that?

FYI - fitted sensors rarely work as well as if they are on the car from the factory.
e.g. with skoda, if you get sensors fitted after purchase, even if done by authorized skoda dealer, a few things dont work in the same way as if they were factory fitted:

    - the little visual indicator on the dash doesnt show up.
    - the radio does not go quiet when you put the car in reverse.,
    - there is no setting to silence the sensors if you dont need them.

I checked with a few experts and its not a fault with the sensors or the fitting, its just that they are fitted differently if you get them after the car has left the factory.

    I.C.E. in car entertainment .

In car entertainment, they were £250 and it was in the UK 7 years ago. The reason I mention it as dealer fitted options are fine but those guys are not specialists. The guys who make a living fitting upgraded or new entertainment systems, upgraded alarms, immobilisers/trackers etc spend all day dealing with the wiring systems of cars. The guy fitting after market sensors in the dealership might spend much of his time fitting spoilers or mirrors. Not knocking his skill but it's less specialist.
