Best Priced Leisure Centre Gym for Annual+Long Term Memberships in Cork City area

Ideally looking for a Gym based out of a full service Leisure Club which would also include the use of Jacuzzi, Steam Room, Sauna etc; as it is nice to be able chill out and relax after a sweaty work-out in the gym. The Montenotte Hotel Leisure Club used to have great deals on Gym memberships until last Spring but now following the recent hotel renovations they have increased their Gym Membership Rates even for their existing/outgoing members by as much as 50% (and the 50% rate increase is a special Discount). Members used to be able to Pay €399 for One Year, Get One Year Free = 2 Year Membership so long as you pre-paid the full €399 amount in one single payment which effectively worked out at only €199.50 Per Year over the 24 Months which was excellent value for money. Now the Best Discount Rate is €299 Per Year (which would amount to €798 over 24 Months) which is a huge difference from one contract to the next.

So far all I could come across was River's Edge Fitness Centre off Sullivan's Quay in Cork City Centre which is currently running a Summer Special Promotional Rate of €195 for Annual Membership but while this price is good - they have No Sauna, No Steam Room, No Jacuzzi etc; which is something I would also like access to if I was to become a member.

Does anyone know of another full service Leisure Club that has Gym and also Steam Room, Sauna, Jacuzzi etc; that offers attractive long term membership deals across 12/24/36 month periods?

We could do with having more competition in the Leisure Club Gym sector here in Cork as prices seem to be rising above wages & inflation rates. I would love to see an operator like Ben Dunne Gyms either open a new facility or acquire an existing facility as they have a more competitive price-point. http://www.bendunnegyms.com/carlisle.aspx I understand that Ben Dunne Gyms has a plan for 12 Month €525 membership rate intended for 3 people which works out at Only €175 for each of the 3 members Per Year which is outstanding value for the full range of facilities on offer. Do any Leisure Centres in Cork have similar attractive membership discount options?

Hmm I'm not sure you'll find anything cheaper than what the new Montenotte rates are.. like 300 a year is 25 a month for gym pool sauna etc its really not bad, seems like any other place would be the same price if not more expensive? Understand youd be annoyed after being a long term member though yeah. You'd be looking pretty much at hotels to get the gym pool sauna combo in cork city. Or maybe Churchfield leisure centre/ Mayfield complex? All you can do is ring and ask about 24 month contracts/ group rates in the various places. Hope you find something suitable! It's definitely a good point that health facilities should be accessible to people of all incomes.

    Thanks for your valuable input.

Your views are more or less exactly what was going through my own mind already but I just thought I would throw my tuppence worth out there just to see if any other ideas came back which I had not considered as Gyms/Leisure Centres can often come and go.

I would accept that Montenotte Leisure Club is not the most expensive club in the leisure centre market in Cork after they reviewed their membership rates of late - it was just the way they came looking for me to renew my membership as I had not been there for several months and they said if you get in there early you will be able to obtain a Discount rate but when I followed up 2-3 weeks later they forgot to say that the so called Discount they were referring would effectively result in a 50% Rate Increase from the membership fee I had already been on and I was very disappointed as I felt somewhat misled by their initial approach. How else would an existing member react when their Gym is calling them about renewal at the Discount rate before it's too late. An existing member is unlikely to regard a 50% Rate Increase "as a Discount" at the end of the day even if it is still marginally cheaper than the new Full Published Rate Card. If other factors like inflation and/or wages had risen by as much as 50% across the board they would have better grounds but the much needed investment after several years of neglect in the Leisure Club is not exactly the way to retain a high level of existing memberships one would have thought. Perhaps they would have achieved more success if they adopted a more modest rise in rates such as a 10% rate increase from Existing Members on their outgoing membership rates for each of the next five contracts - I think this would have been a more wise approach rather than seeking a 50% rate hike from one contract to the next. Now, they will need to recruit a lot more New members from scratch at a higher rate to cover their costs and investment.

With the whole Brexit effect, it's hard to know how much discretionary spending there will be in the Irish economy over the next 5 Years and this will probably have a negative impact on things like Gyms/Leisure Centres in due course. I certainly do not think we have anything like the apparent high growth as reported in the Irish economy and costs have been rising significantly in a number of areas which means people have less money in their pockets.

I think I will just put the whole Leisure Club Membership on the back burner altogether as I would much prefer a membership rather than the PAYG option at Leisureworld right now.

    Ha, good oul Brexit.

It's a gym, it's either worth it for you this year or it's not. I wouldn't be influenced too much by Britain's eventual exit from the EU. :-D
