I thought chickens etc dust themselves as a sort of parasite protection ??

We were always told the a large crop of haws was sign the winter would be real bad.

My granny would look at the mountain out her kitchen window and say "it looks closer today, weather will be good"
Later read that the atmospheric pressure and relative humidity change the perspective through the atmosphere making objects look near/far, I can see a bit of sense in it.

    Note:
I think it doesn't matter which window you look out of, but that would need testing ;)

    Yep to clean themselves.
You'll never see a hen clean themselves in water like the smaller birds.

My neighbour has peacocks, they seemingly call out before rain.......also hearing a curlew is a sign of rain ......but the most definite of all is when I call in the dog and he is wet.....then u know it's raining !!!!! Lol lol

No danger of any bird, hen or otherwise, dusting themselves anywhere in Co.Cavan this last month.
Unless they get into the bag of meal.........
