Should say Rifle is currently unthreaded but I was going to get it done for 1/2 unf

Whatever about the moderator you end up with, I would hold off on deciding on a thread until you decide on the moderator you will go for and whether it will be over barrel type or not and whether you want/need it spigotted or not.

Also depending on the above and the profile of the barrel your chosen gun Smith might advise on a completely different thread.

Is there any really benefit to one type of thread over another.

How common the thread is is usually a big point. This allows you to buy suppressors and sell them easily enough as others will have the same thread. To go for an uncommon one would leave you with a suppressor you cannot sell on should you decide to change.

Also fit. If you have a medium or larger profile barrel you don't want 1/2". It'll look out of place especially when the barrel can accommodate a larger thread. 1/2" unf is 12.7mm. 5/8 is 15.5 or so mm. Have the gunsmith look at the barrel profile and let you know which one you can safely get done that removes the least amount of material while still allowing for a good threading.

If they don't suit you can look to the less common, but still used metric ones. They simply haven't fully caught on here yet, but seem to be on the rise. Metric threads are the M14, M15, M17, etc. They have a higher pitch for better purchase, and i think (but cannot be sure) they have a few more threads per inch (TPI).
