Summer And After....

    Hi There,
    So just a quick post:
I'm 18 and have just completed my leaving cert but went on a holiday after it and so , did not apply for any jobs until now.
I have applied to Carphone Warehouse and am hoping they will get back to me soon.
I am currently living in the west of Ireland but will be living in Dublin from tomorrow onwards for the summer at least.
Here is what i want to know:
    - I am planning on handing out my CV to various shops in a local shopping center near where I will be staying. I am hoping to find a job in some sort of shop/retail for the summer or maybe even after it!.
    - I have a cover letter and CV organised and printed.
    THE PROBLEM:
(this may seem silly) I have really bad anxiety and feel really nervous about approaching different people, I have to have a job for the summer to keep myself afloat!.
Do many people actually manually HAND IN their CVs to employers? Does it look better? Any tips that anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank You.

Others will say if it looks better to hand in in person, but it dies no harm to practice facing and talking to people.

To do this without collapsing with nerves, you need to practice. Write out a few scenarios of you going into a shop, asking to see the manager, explaining you want to leave your CV, thanking them for their time, etc. Then say them out loud. Then do it in front of a mirror. Then role play with a friend.

If you do this, by the time you have gone through it 20 or 30 times, it will be familiar enough to sort out the anxiety.

Preparation goes a looong way. Good luck!

Best of luck with the job search.

One issue first - if you do have anxiety issues (which isn't that unusual, to be honest) - I wonder if retail work is the best kind of work for you. You will end up dealing with the public, including a few cranky people and angry people. So have a think as to whether this is the best kind of work for you. Would you be better perhaps looking for factory work or some kind of back office work?

I'm not directly involved in that market, but as far as I know, people do hand in CVs in smaller shops, where they can find a manager face to face. If it is a chain store where you're probably not going to get the manager directly, there may not be much point in handing it in.

Okay so this may seem extreme but I need to know if it sounds okay or if it is appropriate when looking for a job vacancy... I am just trying to think of every possible scenario and how to approach it reasonably well.

ME: Good Morning/Afternoon , By any chance would your manager be on duty this morning/afternoon?

    SHOP: What For?/Why?

ME: Well, basically I am wondering if there are any job vacancies? I have my CV here also.

Or SHOP: we're not taking CVs
ME: okay that's fine thank you for your time..

Or SHOP: okay I'll leave your CV here for them to find

ME: great thanks very much I appreciate that thank you for your time.

    OR..
ME: when will they be on duty so I can speak with them?
    SHOP:..............

Now- If I get a manager to speak to:

    Hello! , my name is
    , lovely to meet you!
Basically, I am here to see if there are any job vacancies available by any chance?
    [Manager Responce]

If they ask things like "what type of hours or work etc etc"

ME: well I am available for part or full time for all types of work that you may have available.

    [Manager Responce]

Thank you very much for your time, I appreciate that.

    Thank you all in advance
