For quality breeding ewe hoggets you'd want closer to 200

I planned to sell into this market this year but looks like I'll have to keep them for replacements.

Its a nice earner if you have a bit of extra ground to keep them for the year and they are not much work. And you have to be getting €200!

    Would have said 180+ anyways

The ewe lambs could be sold in March for ~125

So, carry them for another 5-6 months after this, should be reflected in the price. I would have thought 140 would be a bad price...

But - having said all right, I am the same as GreenFarmer - I would buy a few ewe lambs, dont buy hoggets.

You just have to be careful when buying hoggets. My replacements were selected last August based on performance and separated from the main flock.

Whats to stop someone from just holding back the smallest of their ewe lambs, keeping them over the spring/summer and then selling them as breeding hoggets in the Autumn?

My advice to the buyer would be to either stick with ewe lambs or only buy farmers stock but that would be expensive.

The people I buy hoggetts off buys them off farmers a year before and sells them on

We buy stores this time of year. Usually buy on farm in bigger groups and there will generally be a few ewe lambs with them. Well take off the ewe lambs put them in lamb and sell them in the spring. You can buy lambs around now for 75-90 and sell them for 130 upwards depending on the yr in the spring without doing much with them!!
