Kindle Fire factory reset?

I have been asked to reset a Kindle fire which is locked out, it belongs to an elderly lady who got it as a Christmas present from her nephew who set it up for her together with an Amazon account, but she forgot the PIN and does not know her Amazon Password, I thought I could do a factory reset but the tablet is looking for her Amazon password first,
I have an Amazon account, could I use that? Or is there any other way to get this working again

I did see that on the Amazon website, my problem is that it is not looking for the PIN, it wants the password for this lady's Amazon account and will not move from there, the only options offered are to login or go back, I can't even change the username to my own, restarting brings it straight back, I think several people have had a go at this before me and it may have locked out due to incorrect passwords or PIN attempts

I'd imagine you'd have to go the adb route and root the kindle and then load stock firmware.
