Four police officers are dead after two snipers opened fire in what was reportedly a coordinated attack during a rally in Dallas, Texas. The rally was being held to protest the deaths of two black men this week at the hands of police. The Dallas Police Department tweeted a statement that an alleged suspect in the police shootings was involved in a shootout with Dallas SWAT officers and had been taken into custody.

A suspicious package was discovered near the suspect's location, which had been secured by the Dallas PD's bomb squad, the Dallas PD statement said. Dallas PD Chief David Brown said, "Tonight it appears that two snipers shot ten police officers from elevated positions during the protest/rally. Three officers are deceased, two are in surgery and three are in critical condition. An intensive search for suspects is currently under way. No suspects are in custody at this time. In a second statement, Brown said that an eleventh officer was shot during an exchange of gunfire with one of the suspects, adding that the officer was being transported to hospital.

A subsequent tweet by the Dallas PD said that a fourth officer had died. The tweet did not specify whether this officer was one of those previously reported to be injured.

    #PoliceLivesMatter ?

When will we see the people march the streets in support of the officers

And people thought the Rodney King riots were bad - what a polarising year this is going to be in the US.

    Soon, I would imagine.

Is that what you're concerned about? How petty. Have you no shame?

Can't wait to see how the NRA and its supporters try and spin how people having access to more guns and not restricting gun ownership in any way would have stopped this one

Some really crazy videos from it.. The police officer getting killed point blank. America has to be one of the most divided nations on Earth and it's getting worse and worse.

They won't be scrimping on the investigation. The man hunt. There'll be no half measures.
And then there's the Death Penalty.

You're really going all in - to go cop killer.

Although this situation is going to put ideas in people's minds.

The leftists have now found another way to turn the blame on middle class white males. It is now Gun Control Policies that are to blame.

Worked in Dallas a few times and it's a very "special" place. The general attitude is that they are keeping the law because is suits them and that's it.
It's no surprise to me that this would happen there.
If they ever try and tighten down on gun ownership Texas will be some challenge.

Gun control is only a left vs right wing issue in the states for, every other civilised country on the planet its simply a human issue where we can all look at the states and go "yeah probably best to restrict those"

Like something out of a movie. What ever about a few bad cookies, I don't think killing officers for there work is the correct way to go about things. They've some looneys in the US.

I don't know if it's a left right issue but it is definitely a white middle class issue. For generations, white men could move into the middle class without doing anything except joining the local factory/industry, steel, lumber, coal, oil etc. Now those jobs are done by machines AND equal rights are being extended to groups such as women and non-whites. The jobs market has come crashing down on white males and resentment towards non-white males is the result.

This explains the Brexit vote and the rise of Trump. America is an unhappy place at the moment

He said that there is a problem with institutionalized racism in policing in the US that needs to be looked at. Literally just after 4 cops got shot dead.

Obama is a disastrous president. A bigger war monger than Bush ever was and he has caused so much bad **** to happen in America by pandering to minority interest groups. If he was white the media would be destroying him on a daily basis for how crap/dangerous he is.

Ah, ****ty reporting from Radio 1 then. They had that speech as his response to the shootings of the cops.

Still doesn't change the fact that he is a crap president. Also, these shootings are pushing Trump closer to the White House.

He's not wrong but its not just one problem though that caused this, theres racism, gun control and mental health to name 3 that 2 of which usually can be shown as the source that likely lead up to this and most of the other shootings that have happened in recent years

Give me your reasons, in bullet point form, for why you think he is a crap president?

I mean, given that he's introduced Obamacare, pulled soldiers from a war they shouldn't have been in, and didn't declare any more wars, plus actually did some excellent work on the international stage, then he's been quite good.

    I question the racism angle.

In most, if not all, of the "racist shootings" the police are found to be completely justified in their actions after an inquest is held because the initial reporting is usually missing key facts to make it look like it was a racist cop shooting an innocent person who was just minding their own business.

Add to that the fact that most of these "innocent" victims usually turn out to have criminal pasts or are found to have actually been in the process of committing a crime at the time and it becomes a bit irresponsible for Obama to come out with statements about racism.

Yeah didn't he make a speech late evening our time yesterday before these shootings happened ? I don't know what to say really. I mean I see all the people on twitter from america saying how awful this is but the common thread here from all these shootings are guns. And the NRA say that guns don't kill people but a guy with a knife can't do as much damage as a guy with a gun.

I understand the way the 2nd amendment is held to be sacred but something has to be done IMO to stop this.

I was listening to a CBS 60 minutes a few weeks ago and a gun maker tried to make a "smart" gun and was subjected to horrible abuse and threats.

The whole thing baffles me is what I'm saying.

But they are not defences to the act of pulling a gun and shooting, policemen are not Judge Dredds taking out those with criminal records, they can only shoot in limited circumstances, usually involving a threat to their lives or to others.

I question the validity of the inquests as the members performing them invariably consist of ex police officers and union reps that just are covering their members asses.

Theres more problems though anyway than just racism, like the police culture of shoot first and ask questions later

Awful news. Responding with violence will just beget more violence. Ultimately in some ways I am surprised it took so long for something like this to happen. There are a lot of guns in the US, and something like this was sadly bound to happen.

There was something crazy going on where Fox news, I believe (and possibly other agencies) identified someone as one of the snipers. Turns out it was just a random guy that brought his rifle with him, to flaunt the open carry permits I believe they have there, but as soon as the shooting happened, he walked straight to the cops, handed in his gun, and allowed himself to be taken away, yet the news still said he was part of it.

His brother appeared on the news, pleading with them to stop showing it and to stop saying he's a sniper, because it'll destroy his life.

That's some bad luck right there!

It doesn't matter whether the victims had criminal records or not- unless they're about to kill somone (cop or not), there is NO justification for what the police did to the guys this week.

The first guy was PINNED to the ground, unable to even reach for a firearm if he wanted to. They shot him point blank when nobody was in danger. The second guy made the mistake of trying to comply with the cop's orders, and was attempting to volunteer the info that he had a gun and a permit.

I thought the US police were supposed to be the best and bravest? Seems they pull a trigger the second they get nervous.

Problem is its likely the people who did it honestly believe they were doing the right thing and will blame it on racism.

This was triggered by racism or at least perceived racism if anyone still disagrees that a man restrained still poses a threat and should be shot point blank
That is then exacerbated by lack of gun control and mental health support which likely enabled these morons to work themselves up enough and gain the weapons to perform this disgusting act

And we don't even know the motives of these shooters yet

Awful tragedy that sadly probably could have been predicted if not on this scale. So sad that these innocent people have died in what you can only assume is a revenge attack for the actions of others.

America really is just a completely crazy place with regards to its gun laws and the complete disregard for the lives of others.
