new livestock trailer

    looking to buy a new fairly new trailer to draw lambs to factory and maybe an odd bullock or heifer. im thinkinhg jim murphy aerlite trailer with decks , i want a small one . any ideas on them?

    We have a 12x6 nugent and a 8x5 aerlite. I have say but I prefer the aerlite. I know the two murphy's father and son who makes the trailers they are gentlemen and only make quality. I would not hesitate to recommend their trailers

    I'd second that.

    I'd say dickie you'd want to budget for €5k for an 8x5 jim murphy with decks and all bells and whistles. But you have a trailer for life.

    Expect some value from UK with sterling especially williams.

    I looked at Willian's I thought murphy was built stronger. The Willian's might pull better nothing beats it on the road

    yeah i dont think i would buy anything other than jim murphy aerlite and had a budget for around 5k as well. we have an 8x4 trailer for the car bought in 1999 and still as good as ever.i never heard anything but praise for the brand

    As standard I think he uses the independent suspension axels on the 8ft trailers and the spring leaf on the 10ft upwards, but if you specified it , he'd fit whichever you like best.

    We've an aerlite ourselves and we are very happy with her. Feels like they're built good and solid.

    The devil is in the detail as they say. Its in the stuff most people overlook. Look at the quality of the fastners used to bold on the sheet metal. Its the cushions on the anti luce clips. Look at the cable used for the lighting. Its twice the thickness of stuff on most lighting boards. Open the plug. All wires have crimped terminals. They actually get the wiring harness made up by a crowd called Kemp in the UK.

    We have a 10*6 cattle trailer from Jim Murphy bought new in 2005, still as good today as the day it was bought. Now it's washed out after each use and stored inside which I believe is the life of all machinery. If I was to upgrade in the morning I'd go straight to Jim's yard and just buy, 100% happy. Little things like the fold down flap at the front, so much easier to pull than the closed in front, I've brought cattle to mart for neighbour with his ifor 12*6 and found that when empty it seems harder tow with no flap, as its generating a lot of wind drag. Just my 2 cents worth. Not slating any brand, the ifor are a good solid trailer also.

    Agree on the flap comment. I bought a williams this year with a flap for the wind drag...also if weather is hot which I know is not too often but u can leave some air into them

    Ordinary 6ft ifor stands about a foot taller then a jeep, and you'd feel it pushing you back on a windy day . Probably want to be on the road a good bit to repay the cost, just wondering really .

    Just wondering about the towing regulations .(Garda have been promising a trailer crackdown on tractor drawn trailers)
    Biggest of jeeps can only tow 3.5 ton most just 3 ton
    What weight is the trailer (A figure I don't see on websites) then how many cattle can you legally carry.?

    Ifor Williams site says
    "All trailers have a maximum gross weight of 3500kg; payload varies between 2010kg and 2550kg depending on size and specification"
    But doses this not mean that a bigger might not necessarily carry more livestock?

    You can carry a tow a maximum of 3.5 tonne. It's quite simple..the weight of the load and the weight of the trailer combined must not exceed 3.5 Tonne. (Assuming the trailer is a 3.5 Tonne capacity trailer) If there is no weight indicated in the I'd plate of the trailer, get it weighed at a weighbridge

    If i was you ,i would look out for a mint trailer second hand .There are farmers all around the country that have that size box bought in good years to avoid tax .I could bet you would pick up either models you mention for half the price a couple of years old

    I see on dd that there interest free deals on Murphy trailers. Wonder are there similar deals for other makes? Better bet than a second hand one IMO.

    Buying a trailer won't have any bearing on your tax liability as it's an asset.

    ...which has a capital allowance which can be written off against your tax bills over a number of years.

    I had an ifor williams bought in 2002 changed it for new ifor this year not nearly the quality in the new one. 500kg bullock kicked the side of it last week and put a good dent in it. Easier pulled alright!!!!!!

    As rangler say try jenkinson's in Northern Ireland with sterling cheap now I would expect anything from 500+ cheaper.

    Very hard to come across 8X5 trailers 2nd hand. 8 years ago was looking for one and rough one were making over 50% of the new ones. Dealers down here were way dearer than NI. IW were around 3800 to 4K d Ordered one off Jenkinson's and and collected it one Saturday with diesel and everything it cost me less than 3300

    Have it on mine, bought second hand so was on it already.
    My trailer is standard height as well not a highline.
    Don't really have anything to compare it to as i don't pull anything else except that trailer.

    I'd imagine if you are doing a lot of road work it would make a difference in fuel over time, but i don't really tow it more than a few times in the year and even then mostly short draws.
