This strategy was launched on July 14th by Minister Andrew Doyle at Glencree, Co. Wicklow.

One of the targets outlined - the management of existing and the creation of new native woodlands - under the Forest Service Native Woodland Scheme and has resources available of nearly €24m up to 2020.

    pdf attached below of strategy.

Central to the strategy is a programme to establish almost 7,000 acres (2,700 hectares) of new native woodland and restore 4,800 acres (1,950 hectares) of existing woodland

    21 September 2016

A 2-day NATIVE WOODLAND SCHEME (NWS) Training Course will take place at the Summerhill House Hotel, Enniskerry, Co. Wicklow, on the 6th & 7th October 2016. This course is the latest in a series of courses undertaken in support of the NWS package, and is held jointly by Woodlands of Ireland and the Forest Service (Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine).

The course includes indoor and outdoor sessions covering native woodland ecology and management, and NWS procedures and standards. A number of similar courses have been held since the scheme's launch in 2001, and these have been attended by landowners, foresters and ecologists, 3rd level students and researchers, and representatives from a wide range of relevant organisations (e.g. NGOs, NPWS, Inland Fisheries, EPA, Coillte). Individuals wishing to become a Participating Forester or a Participating Ecologist under the NWS are required to complete the course.

The NWS support package(*) comprises two separate schemes:

Native Woodland Conservation Scheme supports the appropriate restoration management of existing native woodlands, and also the conversion of conifer forests to native woodlands, especially along sensitive watercourses.

Native Woodland Establishment Scheme (as represented by GPC 9 and 10 of the Afforestation Scheme) is aimed at creating new native woodland on open 'greenfield' sites, including those within environmentally sensitive areas.

Individuals wishing to register for this upcoming course are asked to complete and return the Registration Form (see below contacts for form) to Woodlands of Ireland as soon as possible. Confirmation of registration and a course programme will subsequently issue.

The total fee for the 2-day course is €100. This fee is charged as a contribution towards costs, and includes teas/coffees, lunches and course handouts.
Please note, places are capped at 100 and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Limited accommodation available at the Summerhill House Hotel – contact hotel directly.
Payment by cheque or postal order (made out to ‘Woodlands of Ireland Project’) or by electronic transfer – see details on form. (I did not want to attach form as it has bank details on it)
