GNIB registration renewal date?

Just a question for y'all; I'm here on a Critical Skills permit and my GNIB date is coming up in a few months. As I don't live in Dublin, I registered at my local Garda station, and it took a little over a month to get my card back from Dublin and get my passport stamped. The effective date on my card was about ten days after the date of my registration, and the date of the passport stamp was a month afterwards, but the expiration date for both is exactly one year after my registration date.

So...when should I go in for renewal? Immediately before it expires, a couple weeks before, or more than a month? Will the expiration date on the renewal card and stamp be a year from the date I submit my renewal, or a year from the date the previous one expires? I don't want to have any issues with my permission to remain or gaps in reckonable residence, but I also don't want to have to pay another 300 euro to renew my Stamp 1 yet again 11 months later because the expiration date is a few weeks too early to qualify for my post-permit Stamp 4.
