Irelands murder rate isn't actually that high, I know that an unpopular opinion to have cause everyone loves a good moan but in reality there has been 13 unlawful killings this year of which 11have been gang related (by my count). For a country of 4.5 million people that is actually on the low side of the scale... A lot of states in america only have around the same population as Ireland has and look at the killings there....

Its the harsh legal Irish legal system and hard boiled police force that was potential murderers having second thoughts about murdering.

Or maybe its just that Ireland isn't as violent a society as the media would have you believe.

Not much of a murder rate really, a bunch of people killed in gang related feud. No serial killing or mass murders like in America or suicide attacks like the middle east or other areas affiliated with muslim radicals.

If you want to read up on declining violence, you could look at some of Steve Pinker's work. He makes the argument that compared to historical levels we are less violent at a worldwide level.

I agree. It's a touch higher than the UK's very low rate and pretty much every other crime is recorded at half the rate of England & Wales, car theft being the exception which is considerably higher than E&W. They have nowhere near the hysteria about crime that we have here though. Their news doesn't have the same heavy focus on crime either.
