gas powered boiler won't heat water

    hi,

    I just moved into my apartment last week. the hot water seemed to work fine but I only put it on twice (once was along with the heating).
    As it's summer I don't want to have the heating on. so last night, I set about setting the programmer clock for hot water to be heated this morning. I got up and there was no hot water.
    Anyhow, this evening, I tried playing around with the programmer clock, timing the hot water to come, putting it on boost, advance and continuous. But the boiler did not fire up once! It will only fire up when I turn the heating on (on the programmer). but this evening it turns out that it will only heat the rads, no hot water in the taps!! (I definitely had hot water at the weekend, when I had the heating on)
    I looked around the apartment and turned the room temp controller up to max (30), then turned it down to min value. This made no different to the boiler, still no firing up when hot water selected.
    I did the same with the little thermostat attached to the hot water cylinder in the hotpress. No help.
    I googled a little, it's a mine field so many boiler types etc.
    Anyhow, there are two motorised valves in the hot press on copper pipes. I tried opening the one nearest the tank (from auto to manual), but the little lever slowly returns to the Auto position.
    It's very strange, I had hot water at the weekend when the heating was on, and maybe also when I timed it to come on for hot water (although I'm wondering now if it never came on and I didn't notice, and maybe there was enough hot water in the tank after the heating was on to last a day or two...

    so, my latest actions was to jam the little motorised valve (nearest the tank) open. Now, the boiler is running continuously (despite the programmer being set to OFF for both heating and hot water)!!! not much of a solution really. I dont' understand.

    Has anyone any advice?
    I'd like to do diy if possible, rather than call out expensive engineers/plumbers! thanks!

    Its possible the motorised valve for hot water has failed.
    The actuator (top of the valve) will need to be replaced.

    But it is also possible the issue is either the heating programmers hot water function has failed or the cylinder thermostat has failed.
    Without testing it's impossible to be 100%
