The director of The Deer Hunter and Heaven's Gate has died at the age of 77. He'll be remembered for both films - the former a critical success, the latter a legendary bomb that nearly bankrupted United Artists, but which has received more critical approval recently after his original cut was reassembled.

Trivia: he was the original director of Footloose, but was fired after he tried to turn it in to a musical version of The Grapes of Wrath and the studio thought they might have another Heaven's Gate on their hands.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Sad news. I saw The Deer Hunter at a young age and it left a huge impression on me. Simply a masterpiece.

Also Year of the Dragon was a great, very over the top, violent and controversial gangster drama.

Christ 77, this sort of thing just reminds me of my own age.

I only saw one of his that I actually liked and that was his first film Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, the light touch that he displayed as writer/director was never seen again.

The Deer Hunter is a masterpiece. I must watch it again sometime.

Loved Year of the Dragon too, good mates with Oliver Stone was Cimino, that film showed a lot of both of their characters in the writing and direction.

    RIP.

Cimino almost made the Michael Collins movie before Neil Jordan.

There was plenty of interest in Hollywood some years back, Kevin Costner was almost signed on for the role.
