Is it possible to reactivate a herd number?
Background, husband inherited a farm of land that had a herd number maybe 20 years ago. It belonged to an uncle of his. He is now wanting to get cattle for the land and was wondering if it is possible to reactivate the old number as its the same land etc?

Your best contacting the dvo and they'll tell you what the best thing to do is. It may be possible to reactivate the number or as the previous herd owner is deceased you may be easier to get a new herd number. It won't be a problem that it's the same land.

Yes its possible to reactivate a herd number.we've done it here before.you'll need a death cert for the uncle and proof of ownership for the land. You also have to fill out the ER1 form as you would do for a new number.thick the box for reactivation of old number and put the old number in the box given. Send this into the local DVO's office and after a few weeks you'll get an inspection to make sure the crush and shed and all is still in place. Literally 5 minutes is all your man spent In our place! In the end you'll have the same herd number as before and you still fill out the old blue book as before. Not sure what you do if you havn't the old blue book. Bear in mind you have to buy stock within 6 months from the date your letter to say you can buy is issued.

Dormant. You need to contact your local DVO before you buy in cattle so that I can be reactivated, which may take a couple of weeks.

Would you have to have a crush up before reactivating a herd number or could this be done at a later stage? The old crush is gone

You need a crush, stock proof perimeter fencing and a shed to hold an animal that is sick presuming you are not overwintering.

Yes but could you say reactivate the herd number, buy the stock now and then put up the crush later?

    No.
When new applicants apply for a herd number one of the priorities is that there is a crush in place, tapped water, a shed and proper perimeter fencing.
Read the second and third points in this link https://www.agriculture.gov.ie/animalhealthwelfare/animalwelfare/registrationofpremisesanimals/
Also you may receive a visit from your local DVO to inspect your premises after you reactivate the herd number.

You will have to now contact the Regional Veterinary Office for your county as there are only 9 approx in the country, see attached link for yours

At the very least you would want to be in the process of having a cattle crush put up when applying to reactivate the herd number
