Hi I'm 23 years old. I got a smear test after a family health scares 6 months ago. I paid 45 euros because I am not 25(the age for cervical check). Today I had a smear test and doctors consultation. I was charged 95 euros, 50 for the smear test and 45 for a doctors consultation. This seems not quite right considering my first test results were abnormal. Do I have to pay every time I have a smear until I'm 25 and should I have had to pay ''twice'' at the doctors surgery today. Thanks in advance.

I'd imagine some of the test fee is to pay for lab fees?

The cervical screening program covers smears after your 25th birthday. If you test abnormal, you get the retest for free. If you test normal and then develop symptoms, you need to pay.

I know this as I had a normal smear, then got symptoms that concerned my doctor, and I needed to pay for the smear.

I think it's fairly standard that you pay for the doctors consult too. I didn't at the time because I had a medical card, but I did need to sign the "I performed an extra procedure" form, which means extra money for the doctor.

If you're concerned, ask for a referral to the clinic in the hospital as they are free (I think - a friend attends for regular smears and doesn't pay, however she is over 25).

Yes. Currently all smears are sent to a lab in the states for analysis. Hence the time delay in getting results. The fee is then to cover shipping and processing and whatnot.
