Whats your budget? You could plan a trip to the Open Championship or some other golf event if you wanted to tag along?

Or possibly a 4 ball and lunch at a nice course for him and some mates.

Personally, a weekend away with a green fee to a top notch course (Royal County Down, etc) would be an amazing gift. That would pretty much win the gift challenge for life :P

a series of lessons or a day school at one of the prime teaching venues - Dave Pelz or the National Golf Academy?

Have thought of a lot of those but
    1. Lessons would be prefer to pick tutor rather than me chosing?
    2. Fourball and lunch for friends.... like that but money spent on others as well as him.
    3. Tickets to open. Ya leaning towards that.

    What about something like this

He could head off for a round while you hit the spa. :)

Instead of picking the teacher, you might try:

You'll know him better, obviously, than anyone, but for my birthdays I've always liked getting things I can use and keep so years hence when I'm still using the pressie it's a nice reminder......

.....in that vein, what about a really nice (leather?) holdall for golf trips?

....or a personalised leather scorecard holder

.....or a piece of memorabilia (but only if he's really into that)

....or a powered trolley, if he doesn't have one.

Each to their own but I would hate lessons as a gift. If I want or need lessons, I'll sort it myself.

Tickets to The Open however would make me a very happy camper.

Or you could try something like Jones Bags and get him a personalised version
